Conversations with Natosha Ash

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natosha Ash.

Natosha Ash

Natosha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey began in my younger years when financial constraints led me to create DIY skincare products to address various skin concerns. Whether it was crafting a hydrating face mask for dry skin or delving into natural remedies, my resourcefulness became the catalyst for a deeper exploration.

Upon entering college, hormonal challenges prompted me to adopt a vegan lifestyle, propelling me into the realms of holistic healing. The realization that what we apply to our skin and hair impacts us internally ignited a passion. Determined to learn, I immersed myself in literature on natural healing, herbs, and the science behind them. This newfound knowledge inspired me to formulate skincare products enriched with herbs and potent ingredients.

My aspirations initially leaned towards law, evident in my pursuit of LSAT studies during junior year. However, simultaneous exploration of herbalism and acquiring certifications in 2015 paved the way for a pivotal decision. Driven by a dual passion for healing and justice, I chose the path of naturopathic medical school. This decision was a leap of faith, leading me to a new state and a transformative educational journey.

During medical school, my interest in genetics blossomed, prompting me to pursue a master’s degree in Human Genetics and Genomics. This education shed new light on skincare and hair growth, shaping my perspective on holistic healing. My commitment to education empowered me to infuse scientific knowledge into my business.

After completing my master’s and authoring an e-book on the genetics of hair and scalp, I established a consulting business as a subsidiary of Natruology. This venture has been deeply fulfilling, allowing me to provide personalized insights into the root causes of hair challenges. Understanding that hair loss is often a symptom of internal issues; my mission is to offer high-quality natural products backed by scientific understanding.

In essence, Natruology emerged from my quest for holistic well-being. By investing in additional education, I’ve not only fortified my business but also positioned it as a platform for delivering comprehensive services. My brand aims to continue offering premium natural products while addressing the intricate genetic aspects of hair challenges through personalized consultations.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running my business hasn’t always been smooth, and the hurdles I’ve faced along the way have ultimately contributed to its improvement. These challenges are inherent in the journey of every new business. When I initially launched my business in 2017, I simultaneously entered medical school in 2019. The demanding nature of medical school forced me to temporarily halt my business operations for about three years. Unfortunately, during this hiatus, I lost support from many individuals who had originally backed the business.

Securing capital has proven to be one of the more challenging aspects, placing a strain on the business’s potential for scaling and maintaining a small business status. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with being a small business, the financial burden of funding materials often falls on my personal income.

Mistakes have been made along the way in areas such as labeling, formulating, and shipping. However, each error has served as a valuable lesson, significantly shaping my understanding of how to effectively run and operate a business.

One of the initial hurdles I faced was handling every aspect of the business by myself. I served as the formulator, packager, invoice and label printer, inventory manager, post office courier, shopper, customer service representative, and social media manager. Even today, I still fulfill many of these roles, albeit with a bit of assistance. Balancing these responsibilities while maintaining a high-quality business can be challenging. It’s essential to note that small businesses, often operated by a single individual, face the expectation of operating like larger entities such as Amazon. However, many customers may not realize the logistical challenges involved, especially considering budget constraints and limited capital.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am the proud owner and founder of NaTRUology, a business specializing in hair and skincare products. Within the NaTRUology umbrella, I’ve established Genomane Consulting, a subsidiary where I engage with individuals facing hair care challenges. My commitment is unwavering as I work closely with clients to uncover the underlying causes of their hair loss or other hair-related issues.

What distinguishes me from others in the industry is my innovative approach to skincare. I prioritize creating a pleasurable experience for our customers, evident in the custom-made emblems adorning many of our product bottles. To promote sustainability, we’ve introduced a refill service for numerous products, with plans to expand this offering.

In the realm of Genomane Consulting, we stand out as the pioneers of a unique approach to hair loss consulting. Our distinctive method involves genetic testing and personalized product development based on individual genetics. To the best of my knowledge, we are the sole company currently providing this level of precision and customization in the field of hair loss consulting.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Both my mom and dad have been my unwavering cheerleaders throughout my journey. My dad, in particular, has been a pillar of support, backing every endeavor I’ve embarked upon without hesitation. In 2016, when I shared my aspiration to start a skincare business, I asked him to be my inaugural investor. Without any reservations, he promptly deposited $500 into my account the very next day. This initial investment allowed me to procure essential ingredients, bottles, and labels, setting the foundation for NaTRUology. His advocacy extends beyond financial support; he actively networks with small businesses, opening doors for my products. In all honesty, NaTRUology wouldn’t be where it is today without his invaluable support.

Equally instrumental in my journey is my mom, another significant cheerleader. She contributes to the creative process by either affirming my name choices or offering insightful suggestions. Her unwavering dedication is evident in her consistent promotion of the business on her Facebook platform. On one occasion, she went above and beyond by flying in to assist with our most significant launch to date—the hair serum Regenesis.

As I reflect on their contributions, I can’t help but become emotional. Their support, given in whatever way feasible for them, has been instrumental in my success. Contrary to the notion that family may not fully support business ventures, my family has been nothing short of extraordinary, and for that, I am profoundly grateful.
