Conversations with Mo LaFlo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mo LaFlo.

Hi Mo, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started writing music when I was about 10 years old. I was physically and emotionally abused by my stepmother from the ages of 8-12/13 years old. When I pick up a pen, I am reclaiming my voice. I didn’t know it then; I just knew I liked to write songs and create. I would write versus for my twin brother and I, and we would sing and perform in our Uncle’s church. It was an outlet for me to express and articulate my feelings and emotions. I would play a beat and record my vocals on my voice memos on my Boost Mobile Flip Phone. As I got older, I started making beats with my knuckles while my twin brother and older cousin would freestyle rap. They encouraged me to join in on freestyling, and so I did. Over time, I got better and better at it. During high school, my brother and I would make rap videos on my aunt’s webcam and post them on YouTube. I went off to college and focused my attention on basketball and didn’t do much with music up until my Junior year. I transferred schools during my Junior year and hated every second of being there, so I returned to my outlet music. From there, I never let it go. I graduated college, lived in the northeast for a few years- then packed up and moved to Tucson, AZ, and then decided to truly pursue my music career after having a lengthy conversation with a woman by the name of Desiree Cook (founder of Non-profit organization “I Am You 360” ) she believed in me enough to create an anthem for her organization. Afterward, I believed more in myself and realized I had a gift. I have been using my gift ever since then, ever since Jan 2021.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a smooth road up until May 8th, 2021. My mother was killed the day before Mother’s Day in 2021. It was by a woman whom she attended high school with and had been secretly jealous of my mother all of these years. That was the hardest thing I’ve ever experienced. That is what sparked me to go even harder with expression in my music. And that is how I came up with my first ever project titled “Sparked” My mother’s death sparked something in me that I had never experienced before and that I wish I hadn’t experienced. I wish I could’ve gotten my spark another way. But that is not the cards I was dealt.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a multifaceted musical artist. I am known for my heartfelt songs, exuding emotion (like the true Water sign that I am-Cancer ♋️). I am most proud of myself, in general, for finally believing in me and investing in my career. My most prized baby is the visual I created for my song “Through My Eyes.” What sets me apart from others is that I am very intentional in my work and do not mind standing out or being the “oddball.” I am intentional with my beat selection, words, visuals, people I collaborate with, and even artwork and song titles.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk-tasking! Absolutely. I am a risk taker; if I weren’t, I would not be where I am today. The first risk I took was choosing to attend college out of state and in a state I’d never even visited before (in this lifetime). From there, I have become best friends with change and risk-taking. I’ve met people from all over and all walks of life. I took a risk and moved to Arizona (way across the country), knowing nothing about the desert. That has been the best choice I’ve made for myself. I have gone through so much change and spiritual growth since being here. If I were to be afraid of taking risks, my life would be so much different right now, and I’d probably still be in Florida.
