Conversations with Michael Raby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Raby.

Michael Raby

Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We are family-owned and operated. My family is originally from Boston, MA, and we have a cabin in the Berkshires, so that is where the name came from. We have been in Surprise for 22+ years. This is where my wife, Lisa, and I have raised our 3 children.

I have 30+ years’ experience in the jewelry business. My vision is to provide uncompromised customer service in a no-pressure, friendly environment. “Nobody buys jewelry for someone they don’t care about.”

It is exciting to be part of a growing community, getting to know the local families, and being able to help people with a very emotional purchase. It does not matter the cost of a beautiful piece of jewelry, the emotion is the same. It all comes down to “love”.

We offer fine jewelry, natural and lab-grown diamonds, bridal and engagement rings, fashion jewelry, custom design, and on-site repair, as well as watches and watch services.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I opened the store in Jan 2020, and within in weeks had to close because of the Covid breakout. Not a great way to start a brand-new business. But the amazing loyalty of our clients we made it through.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have been in the industry for 30+ years. Started my career with a large chain company that gave me the experience and ability to learn the trade of jewelry and watches. What gave me the vision of opening my own company was that I wanted people to be comfortable when walking into a jewelry store. For some, it can be quite intimidating. At Berkshire, we are down-home, casual, and put our clients in a comfortable environment. It’s not uncommon to have a baseball game on in our store. My family works with me from time to time, and my team is part of that family.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Take the leap of faith and surround yourself with knowledgeable people to help you build the business of your dreams. Never be afraid to ask questions and receive help when needed. Most people are genuinely kind and want you to succeed. My wife and kids have been my biggest strength when faced with challenges.
