Conversations with Mendy Hoffman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mendy Hoffman.

Mendy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am the owner of Velocity style bar in Arcadia. Velocity style bar is a locally owned and operated blow dry bar in Arcadia. I started Velocity three years ago after I decided to leave the medical field and start my own journey to empower other women and get involved personally in our community. Starting a business is one of the most challenging and rewarding things I have ever done especially through a Pandemic.

We are fortunate to partner with Phoenix Fashion Week with Beauty By You tutorials, The Polo Party and The Style Trend Show. Velocity was recently blessed by being able to do hair and makeup for a designer at the Lagos Fashion in the Sky event. We also collaborate with several photographers as HMUA for headshots, runways and magazines.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I was told since I did not have an extensive background in hair, I would not make it owning a blow dry bar/salon. For me, that was discouraging and also pushed me to prove them wrong. Learning to manage employees and learn a business hitting the ground running was a character builder. Covid was another challenge. I wanted to make sure Velocity stayed present and the community knew we were still here and will fight through the obstacles. We did! I am so thankful for the opposition and hurdles for personal growth.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Velocity, we love to beautify you with blowouts, braids and makeup for any occasion, event, date or because you have had an injury or surgery which makes it difficult to wash your own hair. We collaborate with our local community often and volunteer by helping young girls at Streetlights USA. We strive to create a personal and consistent experience with a staff that truly cares. We even offer warm blankets at the shampoo bowl! Our motto is Empower Yourself. We want you to be able to come here to relax, be spoiled and let your hair down.

What does success mean to you?
I define success by personal growth and positively impacting others.
