Conversations with Krista Lyons

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krista Lyons.

Krista, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Pennsylvania. I started off as a hairstylist in New Jersey. I worked in an upscale salon for 15 years. I then became a mom of four beautiful daughters. I loved living in New Jersey because it allowed me to have access to New York City’s fashion and beauty hub. That gave me better access to more advanced education.

My husband’s job has moved me from Texas, to Oregon, to here in Atlanta. I come from a small town and wanted to live in a bigger city to pursue bigger dreams.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
While I have loved living in different places, I have had to essentially start my career over in each state. That has made the journey a little bumpy. However, I did enjoy seeing how each state is different in how they do hair. In Oregon, they focus less on styling and blowouts. In Georgia, it reminds me of when I was doing hair in New Jersey. It is faster paced and has more of an East Coast style.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love being able to work with people and relating to them. I am definitely a “people” person. I like to listen to stories and learn about their life while doing their hair. That also helps me learn what hairstyle would work best for them given their lifestyle.

I am also a big believer in teamwork, being there for your coworkers, and learning from them. At Zeba Hair Salon, we work best together versus alone.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I am seeing a change in the industry that is focusing more on teamwork. I am seeing less chair rentals/salon booths and more stylists returning to a salon environment. This has been a beautiful trend to see. I worked in a hybrid salon at one time and I really prefer the teamwork culture of a commission salon more.

Lived in looks are definitely coming back into style. People are so busy nowadays and can’t sit in the salon every four weeks for hours. I try to be as efficient as possible with my client’s time and give them looks that require less maintenance.

I also see a lot of salons really trying to reduce their waste. More and more salons are becoming eco friendly and recycling as much as possible. This is huge because the beauty industry is one of the biggest contributors to waste. At Zeba, we recycle everything from used hair foils, to excess color, to hair.
