Conversations with Kevin Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Smith.

Hi Kevin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Kevin and Kaia launched their business in 2019, initially selling hand-drawn greeting cards, postcards, and stickers at a local farmer’s market. Thirteen-year-old Kaia, a budding entrepreneur with a passion for art, collaborated with her father, Kevin, a college professor and fellow art enthusiast. Kevin created the designs, which Kaia then colored with colored pencils. Their unique work quickly caught the attention of local businesses, leading to sales in retail locations.

Over the past six years, the business has expanded significantly. Kevin now handles all the artwork, as Kaia is a college student at Montana State University in Bozeman, MT, and no longer actively involved. Their cards, stickers, and postcards are currently sold in over 350 retail locations worldwide.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Over the years, we’ve learned to efficiently handcraft stationery that maintains an artisanal feel, distinct from mass-produced imports. We also prioritize developing products using eco-friendly materials. Our commitment to growth includes continually exploring new technology platforms and marketing strategies.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Our passion is illustrating distinctive cards and stickers that aim to make people think, smile, laugh, and feel good. Many of our designs are born from the things that inspire us most—the outdoors, sports, places we explore, books we read, and movies we watch. The creative process always starts with a pencil sketch in a sketchbook, which we then transform into digital art.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was an active kid with diverse interests. I loved art and sports, spent lots of time outdoors with friends, and enjoyed pop culture like Star Wars movies, Legos, and my Atari 2600. This blend of creativity and curiosity defined my early years. My passion for sports eventually led me to a career in education. I started as a high school math teacher and now I’m a college professor, teaching future educators how to teach math and use technology.
