Conversations with Kayla Travis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Travis.

Hi Kayla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I started playing basketball for a club basketball organization, Arizona Elite when I was eight years old. During high school, my dad took over the club organization and it became a family non-profit passion. I went on to play basketball for Stanford University and in the WNBA and overseas. Once I retired from basketball, I moved back to Phoenix and helped my parents run Arizona Elite. We grew Elite into a reputable club program and have hosted major tournaments for years. The COO of Legacy Sports USA knew about our program and asked us to make Bell Bank Park our home. We just moved into the facility and love it! My dad is still the club president and he will also run Legacy Sports USA’s college viewing tournaments. I oversee the middle school teams for Arizona Elite and oversee all of the girls’ basketball programs at Bell Bank Park.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been relatively smooth as it was a huge blessing being able to travel the world, meet people, and throw a ball into a hoop! The lifestyle requires you to be away from family and to change teams twice a year, which makes building relationships hard. That and the physical toll that the sport puts on your body was the hardest part.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the Director of Girls Basketball for Legacy Sports USA. I oversee the girls club basketball program, Arizona Elite, our leagues, camps, tournaments, skills training, and rentals at Bell Bank Park. I’m known for my playing career at Stanford, where we went to four Final Fours. I’m most proud of the family that God has blessed me with, an amazing husband and one-year-old daughter. I love pouring into our youth through the game of basketball. I love watching our players grow and become well-rounded young women.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was always very driven and a typical firstborn in every way. At age eight, I knew that I wanted to play for Stanford. So, I worked as hard as I could and was blessed to have achieved that dream. Looking back, I could have loosened up a bit but I’m grateful that I was able to pursue that dream so early in my life.
