Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalin Colvin.
Hi Kalin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I always wanted to become a stylist, but I can be one track minded at times. I was quickly advancing in CNA work. After numerous promotions working in Nursing Homes, I finally started my own Private Caregiving business. It’s funny because I would find myself more and more excited to style their hair for the day. In 2020, I had put in 10 years of CNA work and found myself being more and more drawn to becoming a stylist. I’ve always taken care of my hair as well as a few of my family members. But, I really wanted to do it full time…
I just didn’t have a clue on where to start. So I started self teaching. I read books, watched videos, and reached out to stylists for their expertise. My grandparents own a salon in Detroit, MI and my aunt is a licensed cosmetologist so they were pretty excited to give me their knowledge as well. I literally put all my focus into learning about natural hair every day and used myself as a test dummy on products, styling tools and styling methods. When I felt ready to take on clients, I advertised on Facebook and Instagram.
I planned to transition into becoming a stylist, giving myself a year to gain enough clientele to work full time. That did not go as planned! The following month after advertising I was fully booked for the entire month! I gave my caregiving clients notice about my career change and I’ve been working as a full time stylist ever since.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road but I am extremely grateful for how fast my clientele grew in a short amount of time. Some struggles I faced was learning how to manage such a large clientele. I’ve made so many changes to my booking site since I started. For example, I had to learn the hard way that I can’t leave my books open more than 30 days or I’ll be booked on days that I need off. I try my hardest not to cancel anyone’s appointments when I have things to do in my personal life so figuring out what works and what doesn’t has been nothing but trial and error. Tackling this was so important to me because many clients need to stay on a routine with their hair care when their goal is to have healthy hair. Having an organized and convenient schedule works out for both me and my personal life as well as my client’s hair journey.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in natural hair care. I maintain the health of my client’s hair by providing hair treatments for each client. I’m known for my silk presses. Many women love a weightless, shiny, and bouncy silk press. That grabs a lot of people’s attention. I am most proud of my clients for seeing real results from the treatments that I provide. What sets me apart from others is that I don’t offer in and out services. During your appointment, my total focus is on you and your hair care needs.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Social media can be very draining, however, there’s tons of information that you can get out of it. I enjoy YouTube, TikTok and Instagram the most. I’ve learned a lot on these apps as well as used these apps to create videos showcasing my work.
