Conversations with Joi Spears

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joi Spears. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Joi Reece is a collaborative artist and mother from Los Angeles, California. She received her first degree in Studio Art from Santa Monica College, and later went on to receive a Bachelor’s in Visual and Public Art from California State University, Monterey Bay. Primarily a portrait artist, she creates work that is intended to encourage dialogue and interaction between viewer and artwork. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Joi discovered a new love for resin crafts and quickly took up the trade. With the help of her husband, she began to grow her business selling these crafts. She decided to call it Spears & Co. to model their family and emphasize the intimacy of her work. Everything is made by hand, by the Spears family, right in their living room.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest challenge for me in running this business is finding the time to relax between working. I juggle a full-time job, full-time school, two toddlers, and my art business, so maintaining effective communication with my clients and formatting my website in a way that allows my clients to design their pieces to their liking allows me to work smarter rather than harder, which results in more downtime to facilitate self-care and relaxation.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Whether it’s our handcrafted resin self-defense pieces, novelty board game pieces, or other functional resin artwork, you can purchase with confidence knowing that all of our products are handmade with careful dedication and each piece treated as an individual work of art. No two products are the same.

Every item offered on my site is available for custom order, which allows the client to have a full say on the outcome of their purchase.
