Conversations with John Adams

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Adams.

John, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
For over two decades, John Adams has played a pivotal role in the evolution of Biosphere 2, steadily advancing through positions of increasing responsibility and oversight. Beginning in 1995, he led all terrestrial experiments within Biosphere 2, leveraging his deep understanding of the facility and its scientific mission. In 1999, Adams became Biosphere 2’s Media Coordinator and Public Spokesperson at Columbia University, managing global inquiries, enhancing public awareness of the University’s pioneering earth systems science research, and developing K-12 education programs, including Passport to Learning™. Simultaneously, he oversaw B2’s exhibits and public outreach efforts.

After a brief tenure in the private biotech sector, where he managed R&D, sales, marketing, engineering, and design for an innovative water treatment technology, Adams returned to Biosphere 2 in 2004. His extensive institutional knowledge proved invaluable during a critical transition period, during which he held key roles as Facilities Manager, Health & Safety Supervisor, Public Outreach Coordinator, and Biological Systems Manager. His leadership culminated in a seven-year tenure as Assistant Director of Planning and Facilities.

In 2014, Adams advanced to his current role as Biosphere 2’s Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer. In addition to overseeing research and operational activities within Biosphere 2 and its surrounding campus, he serves as the primary spokesperson for the facility. He frequently provides interviews to local, national, and international news organizations and delivers presentations to K-12, undergraduate, and graduate students, further expanding public engagement with Biosphere 2’s mission

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been an extremely rewarding career. I feel very fortunate to have started my professional journey here, and nearly 30 years later, I’m still working at the same place—a rarity in today’s work environment.

The University of Arizona has given me the opportunity to grow and develop professionally by not narrowly defining my role. This flexibility has allowed me to diversify my skills and contribute to the advancement of Biosphere 2 in many different and meaningful ways.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am entrusted with virtually all aspects of running Biosphere 2, operating with little to no direct oversight. I take pride in having a comprehensive understanding of the facility and in having performed nearly every job here over the years.

I am a certified scientific diver, regularly diving in our one-million-gallon ocean, and a qualified structural climber who led the development of our climbing program. I continue to climb and dive to support research initiatives and essential facility maintenance.

Beyond field operations, I help manage the business side of Biosphere 2, including developing two mobile apps designed to enhance the visitor experience. I’m also actively involved in the design and execution of a wide range of scientific experiments.

I oversee all construction efforts on site, many of which go well beyond conventional building projects. These include the Landscape Evolution Observatory, the world’s largest indoor Earth science experiment, as well as initiatives like Space Situational Observatories and solar energy installations.

I believe in leading by example. I will never ask anyone to do something I wouldn’t do myself, and I don’t view any task as beneath me. As the saying goes, I started in the mailroom and worked my way up to my current role as Deputy Director.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I have the privilege of working with an incredible team here at Biosphere 2 and dedicated colleagues at the University of Arizona. Without their support and collaboration, neither Biosphere 2 nor I would be as successful.
