Hi Janna, can you introduce yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Many can relate to my story as it is not a unique one; I think most have experienced similar stories. In my imagination in my youth, I had a strong desire to pursue being an artist. Yet, opportunities were passed as the family took priority. Having devoted my energy raising my three daughters, running a household and working full time in the Fire Life Safety industry, I rarely had the opportunity to focus attention on my art. Family, children were my focus as it brought me great joy supporting, cheering and experiencing the beauty of growing. Quite a few conversations were had with my husband, Dave, as he knows and understands this lady cannot sit still. His unwavering support and understanding were crucial in my journey. He suggested finding a path to keeping myself busy, as the dread of empty nesting was approaching quickly. In 2021, a spark was lit with constant synchronicity, and it repeatedly presented itself to me! The slumbering artist reemerged.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road is not meant to be smooth; if it were, what fun would it be? The daunting reality of becoming more proficient in marketing has been challenging as I am in uncharted waters. Researching, studying, and speaking with other fellow artists has been helpful.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My current artwork is abstract and contemporary; my medium has morphed into Mixed Media. As I continue my artistic journey, my voice in painting has begun to emerge. You will find tactile textures throughout my body of work, along with soothing, calm color palettes—the titles and themes surrounding my artwork focus on personal and spiritual inspiration. When I reflect on where my inspiration comes from, it is how I perceive my surroundings in a harmony of colors, city-building shapes, and Arizona’s beautiful landscapes. This year has been full of successes in the Open Calls for Artists. I’ve received second place at Ground Floor for “Urban,” a Bronze award at Camelback Gallery for “Woven Memories,” and several Honorable Mentions. What sets me apart from others is my tenacity.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
My husband and I love going on long rides on his Harley, exploring Arizona’s country backroads. This is our way of unwinding and finding inspiration in the beauty of nature.
