Conversations with Jami & Dani of The Band Kris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jami & Dani of The Band Kris.

Jami & Dani of The Band Kris

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
It all began with a song we wrote, a tribute to our late brother Kris when we realized how much we love making music together. Naming ourselves ‘The Band Kris’ was our way of keeping our brother’s name and spirit alive through our music and chasing this dream for more than just ourselves, but for him too! In 2014, we went all in. We were determined to do whatever it took to make our dreams come true. We emailed every venue in our area to try and convince them to let us, two teenage girls, play at their venue. But oh boy, did we learn the hard way about the importance of a gig history! So, we adopted the ‘fake it till you make it mindset, and voila! Our first gig was in the bag. And we felt unstoppable.

We started booking shows four times a week, even on school nights. We were addicted. Four years later, we moved to Nashville, Tennessee, the holy grail of country music. Playing at the Bluebird Cafe was like hitting the jackpot of our childhood fantasies. For two years, we lived in the heart of music city, which allowed us to learn the ins and outs of the music industry and helped us craft our sound and develop as musicians. Fast forward to today, that same determination we had when we were kids has only strengthened. Now, we utilize the advantages of social media to connect with our fans in every possible way. We post a new video on YouTube five days a week and on other platforms; posting or going live has allowed us to connect with our fans regardless of where we are.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story. Has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
What struggles should we mention? When we played a show with nobody in the audience? Or when we auditioned for America’s Got Talent and got rejected? Haha, we are no strangers to rejection! But the biggest challenge for us was moving across the country to pursue our lifelong dream and then realizing our dream is not unique. It is popular! It was scary being brand new in a city full of super-talented musicians chasing after the same dream as you.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a pop music sister duo! We are overly obsessed with songwriting, which has been consistent throughout our entire career. Our YouTube channel became a place to share more music between our releases. We currently have 7 songs available on all streaming platforms, but compared to the number of songs we have written, it was so important to us to make sure our fans knew that we had more music to share! We were never shy about opening up our songbook and sharing a song the same day we finished writing it. This led to our fans naming us the Queens of Petty because our songs became so obviously specific; it was clearly about something that upset us the day before, haha.

What does success mean to you?
Every single day, we measure success differently. How much progress did we make today? Did we take massive action towards our music career and jump at every opportunity? We are self-help junkies at heart, so we are constantly trying to become better individually and as a band.
