Conversations with James Jenkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Jenkins.

Hi James, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story is a complicated one, to say the least. I was born in Panama and moved frequently as a child. I joined the Army in 1987 and got out in 1991. After working as a radar technician I got degrees in broadcasting and business management. I’ve worked in the restaurant business, fitness industry, and call centers to earn enough to support my creative work.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
“It’s not the destination, it’s the journey” I try to remember… The road has not been smooth. The destination changes based on many factors. Health, jobs, money, and family are all factors. I’ve struggled with balancing the need to create art and the need to support my family.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a polymer clay artist. I’ve been creating unique works from polymer clay for 20 years. I’m most proud of my work using millefiori techniques to create bowls, cover glass pieces, or unique animal sculptures. The attention to detail and unique use of polymer clay canes is what make my work original.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I spent a lot of my time alone growing up. I would walk or hitch a ride to the library on base and watch old In Search Of videos narrated by Leonard Nimoy. I would read a lot. I loved movies like Star Wars, Raiders of the lost arc, and Horror movies of any sort.
