Conversations with Huy Do

Today we’d like to introduce you to Huy Do.

Huy Do

Huy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Saigon, Vietnam. My family are first-generation immigrants; I came here as a child, so that would make me 1.5 generation. I’ve lived in Arizona since I was about 7 years old. Growing up, I’ve always had a strong love and interest in music. Throughout my youth, I’ve always listened to all types of music, ranging from hip-hop, rock/metal, and EDM music. I got kicked out of my parents at 19 years old and was then hit in the face of the harsh realities of life and living from paycheck to paycheck; barely able to make rent. It was during this time was when I decided to take up making music. I wanted to learn how to make beats first so that I can write songs on my own production. I haven’t stopped making music since and continue to hone my craft til this day.

It was hard for me to be an artist as my family didn’t accept and support what I wanted to do but I pushed through those obstacles, and it led me to find a support system of close friends that help manage my music today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been the smoothest road for me. Being kick out of my house at 19, I felt that I wasted a lot of time and money trying to fight to find a compromise as way to please my family by going to college three different times. I dropped out of a community college, and I dropped out of a trade school and eventually, it lead me to a school called CRAS (Conservatory of Recording Arts and Science). I graduated CRAS but even then, I felt unsatisfied and unfulfilled with that I wanted to do, but I appreciate everything that I’ve learned from that school and still apply what I learned today. I’ve struggled internally with what I really wanted to do, which was music and having no real support system. I wasn’t sure if being an artist was something that I could do. Fast forward I learned that trying to please others at the compromise of your goals and dreams wasn’t worth it to me. I wanted to be happy, and I wanted to make art. Eventually, I found my support system and now I’m so blessed to be now surrounded by people who want to see me win.

With my creative struggles as an artist, I’ve always had an imposter syndrome, I was surrounded by so many friends who were such talented musicians/artist. It took me years to eventually see that I am an artist and that my art matters. I’ve been through so many creative blocks, I’ve struggled with mental health (depression, ADHD, low self-esteem), but I pushed through all those things, and it has made me a better person for myself and those around me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a singer, songwriter, and producer. Overall, I’m an artist.

I don’t really specialize in anything because I’m a jack of all trades. I can make anything I set my mind to, but as of right now I’m very deep within my brand and harnessing my sound as an artist.

I make a range of different genres, from rock, hip hop, to EDM, and they all have the “alternative” flair that I like to add to my music and lyrics.

I enjoy making content for my supporters to interact and see some of my daily personal life.

I’m so proud of how far I’ve come and how I continue to push myself every day.

I believe what sets me apart from others is my range as an artist. I don’t want to box myself into one category; I want to try it all and add my own flair to multiple avenues of music.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Don’t take the simple things for granted.
