Conversations with Howard Weiss

Today we’d like to introduce you to Howard Weiss.

Howard J. Weiss was born in Washington, D.C. and began taking art lessons at the age of 14 from a local art instructor in Maryland. While he initially preferred to use a pencil rather than a paintbrush, his artwork progressed from drawing to painting and he began entering art local art competitions where he received several ribbons for his work. Howard then took a hiatus from painting while attending college and started painting again during his years in law school.

It was during this period of time that he developed an interest in abstract painting, and he found that painting provided a means of relaxation after long days of attending classes and studying. After graduating from law school, Howard moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he is currently a practicing attorney. During the height of the COVID pandemic in the summer of 2020, Howard started painting again after nearly 30 years. He was looking for something to do at home on nights and weekends and converted a guest bedroom at his house into an art studio. Howard had his first art exhibition in October of 2020 and continues to create original acrylic paintings on canvas and wood for both residential and commercial interiors.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been an exciting trip and I feel things are moving in the right direction. After approximately 30 years away from a paintbrush, my art continues to evolve and I’m getting very positive feedback from both artists and non-artists alike. I continually experiment with new techniques and mediums and have started incorporating spray paint into my acrylic paintings. I’ve even been asked to collaborate with a rapper/graffiti artist in Los Angeles, California, and we are currently working on a project together. I’m also in the process of collaborating with a long-time friend for the purpose of creating a line of sneakers and streetwear. We have recently applied for a federal trademark and are keeping the name under wraps until the trademark application gets approved.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a commercial real estate attorney by trade, and that is currently my full-time job. I represent clients that are buying, selling and leasing commercial property throughout Arizona. I am most proud of the fact that my clients often look at me as not only their attorney but also as a friend that cares about their needs. I am very passionate about making sure my clients are educated about the decisions they are making and know that I have their back.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
While I was growing up, I was very focused on academics and was always a type A personality. I had lots of friends and was very social. In my spare time, I enjoyed art, sports and attending concerts. I still have the same interests.
