Conversations with DOLC3

Today we’d like to introduce you to DOLC3.

Hi DOLC3, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We met through one of the University of Arizona’s dance teams, but the real bonding happened back in the dorms, goofing around, singing covers, and having dorm room concerts no one asked for. Then one night, we realized that we wanted to make something of our own. Now, we are starting the new year with our very first concert (see photo below for details).

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not entirely. We have had a fair amount of obstacles since we started. We went from seeing each other every day to working 100% remotely in different cities once COVID hit. Also at this point, we were all reaching a turning point in our lives as we were about to start our professional careers in healthcare. So, it is an understatement to say we were living our “Hannah Montana” fantasies. Amongst the three of us, music was technically our “Plan A”, but having healthcare careers made it hard to convince people that we wanted to pursue music seriously. Now, as independent musicians, our biggest struggle is visibility and having to still work across different cities (Phoenix and Tucson).

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I think it’s best to start off by the fact that we are Arizona’s first girl group and we are 100% independent! We create our own music, lyrics, and choreography. The best way to describe DOLC3 is that we are a girl group anomaly. We are not fully glam, sexy, or cute, which are the stereotypical “girl group” concepts. We can be any concept we want when we feel like it. We are rowdy, goofy, rough around the edges, and not confined to boxes.

As for what we are most proud of, we are so honored to have such a talented group of friends who help us grow. From photoshoots, to graphic design, to styling, and to music videos, our friends have volunteered to support us as a way to cultivate their own artistic pursuits. Now that we are getting more established, we even have friends helping us with marketing, social media, and event management. We consider ourselves to be very lucky to have such a supportive circle, and we can’t wait to succeed with them. As we say, “when we rise, you all rise”.

What were you like growing up?
Coming from immigrant backgrounds, we always had to excel in everything we did, especially when it came to our education. This led to us growing up more reserved, shy, and seemingly focused on school. But in reality, we were eager to find an artistic escape. In college, we took the opportunity to express ourselves through music.
