Today we’d like to introduce you to Dean Banowetz.
Hi Dean, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Dean Banowetz I’m the 13th of 15 children born and raised on a farm in Iowa. I’m a decorated veteran US Army. I moved to Los Angeles from Iowa in 2000 and started working on the television show Extra after my contract with Extra was up, I moved on to American Idol as the department head for Hair. Are usually work on competition reality shows that involve singing dancing or specialty acts. I have worked on America’s got talent, Shark Tank, world of dance, So You Think You Can Dance, and many award shows. I have been nominated for seven Emmy awards for outstanding hair. I have nine Guild nominations for outstanding hair with 2 wins. I’m an author my book is called the “Dean’s list of Daddy Dos” A self-help guide for dads to do their kids’ hair. I’m currently working on my next book the entertainment hair business as well as working on a lecture series and an online training program.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Working in the beauty business especially in Hollywood has some struggles. One of the biggest struggles is time. When you work on the television show the hours can be excruciating. It is very normal to have a call time at 4:30 AM and you work until eight or 9 PM. Since I’m single it hasn’t been that big of an issue and I’m doing what I love to do.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I do hair for Television. My main focus is in competition reality shows. Most of the shows I do focus on singing, dancing, and specialty acts. I am most proud of creating and cultivating pop culture looks on American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance. What sets me apart from others is that I look at styles differently and I use different items to create a look. I always try to go the extra mile
What do you think about happiness?
There are many things that make me happy but I would say I’m most happy when I’m by the ocean. There is something very calming and spiritual about the magnitude and the flow of water. And growing up in Iowa we didn’t really have a beach or large masses of water. When I’m by the water it recharges me inspires me and motivates me.
