Curtis Dickman, MD—renowned neurosurgeon turned celebrated visual artist—creates bold, innovative, and emotionally resonant works that engage both intellect and imagination.
Dr. Dickman’s art reflects the same precision, curiosity, and creativity that defined his distinguished medical career. A world-recognized specialist in spinal neurosurgery, he was known for his surgical mastery, groundbreaking inventions, research contributions, and academic excellence. Today, that same spirit of innovation lives on through his art.
His diverse body of work spans opticokinetic illusions, reverse-perspective sculptures, vivid collages, mixed media compositions, and expressive paintings inspired by emotion, perception, pop culture, music, technology, and science. Many pieces are intentionally constructed to shift and transform as the viewer changes position—activating the eyes, engaging the brain, and stirring emotion. Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My career paths have been filled with struggles and challenges. I was abused by my father as a child and teenager, and sought extensive mental health counseling as a teenager and adult to overcome my PTSD from this abuse.
‘I chose the most challenging field in medicine to pursue, Brain Surgery. My medical career was intellectually, physically, emotionally, and spiritually INTENSE, requiring absolute dedication, stamina, creativity and courage.
In 2009 I had a serious bicycle accident which caused me chronic pain. In 2015 I retired from my medical practice and became a full-time professional artist.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My artwork is very diverse. my pieces reflect multidimensional artistry, including opticokinetic illusions, reverse-perspective sculptures, vivid collages, mixed-media pieces, and paintings inspired by emotion, perception, pop culture, music, technology and science.
Dr. Dickman specialized in spinal neurosurgery and was world-renowned for his surgical skills, inventions, innovative technical contributions, research, and academic excellence. His second act as an artist has been acclaimed for its technical brilliance and personal resonance. Many of his pieces are constructed to transform depending on the viewer’s visual position, engaging the eyes, brain, emotions, and intellect.
