Today we’d like to introduce you to Clint Pittenger
Hi Clint, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Before I started DJing I played guitar and some bass in punk glam bands in Hollywood, California. I was fifteen when I started and seventeen when I started to learn to DJ. My dad worked in the film industry so I had the opportunity to meet other people who had the same interest. After a few years of struggling when the hair rock scene was so intense, a friend showed me how to DJ and from there I started mixing house, techno, and trance. House music was the popular genre and I stayed with it. My wife, Angela Pittenger, and I got invited to move to Tucson to get a fresh start since living in Los Angeles was too expensive. Once we got to Tucson, Arizona I started Starlightdeejays as my business and since 1998 I have been a local business owner providing a DJ service for everyone. My goal was to provide excellent customer service, and affordable rates, and make sure everyone was happy. When I got married we couldn’t afford a DJ and photographer, so I wanted to start a business and make sure anyone could get a DJ without the financial stress and worries regarding their event.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The struggles were competing with other DJs who already had a good reputation around Tucson. I had to request favors from friends to let me DJ their parties, weddings, and any event they were having without charging them. It helped and after a while, I started getting calls and connections from vendors. The other struggle was making sure I had the music for all my events. It was harder to get everything at the time because vinyl and CDs were the only way. I borrowed CDs from friends and sometimes the clients would lend me their CDs, but after a while, I subscribed to DJ pools and was able to keep up with the latest trends in music. Challenges never end but you learn from your other challenges how to engage and learn to find a solution without anyone knowing what’s going on.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Music has always been in my life. Anytime my mom was out running errands we would stop at a music store and buy something. I loved rock music and collected vinyl and cassettes, which I still have. Now, I have the opportunity to make my music, which I do. You can find some tracks on SoundCloud and Bandcamp. I love making ambient shoegaze mixed with a variety of drum beats. I have made some techno, which is located on YouTube and Bandcamp. I plan on making more and continuing to have fun mixing my music.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Always stay in a good vibe. No matter what, you have to be in a good mood, stay respectful, and have fun with everyone. I know you can’t please everyone but a smile and a positive attitude can go a long way. I keep my music clean and radio-friendly. Now if I am DJing an event that doesn’t require edited tracks I have all that ready to go. I always try to be helpful, meet and greet, and be a team player at all venues.
