Today we’d like to introduce you to Chazz Straziscar.
Hi Chazz, we’d love for you to introduce yourself.
I have no idea how I got to where I am today; life just happens, and suddenly, you are, wherever you’re at that moment. Life has me fucked up sometimes with all the curve balls it throws in my direction. Like, surprise bitch, plot twist! I always need to learn how to answer questions like this.
Hello, my name is Jett Smith, I am not Chazz but I’m also in the band. I play bass and sing in So Happy. I used to play in the Linecutters, I love music, I love making people dance, I love my friends, my family, and I’m happy to still be here on earth even though life sucks. Stoked to be here.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A smooth road is one way to word how not smooth it has been to get to where I am at 26 years old. It’s taken going through literal hell and back to make only about not much progress at all. Music is the reason I am not dead today.
The road is full of potholes and fuckin aggressive drivers, all kinds of infrastructure problems that are long overdue and there’s never room in the budget to fix the road. But it’s a road I guess, so fuck it, let’s get it. Fuck all the bullshit.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I can play the guitar and sing at the same time, like multitasking. It’s not the coolest thing in the world. A lot of people do it. I like to take my emotions and explain them through writing songs. I’m proud of the record. It’s an uplifting record to me. So Happy I just recorded “I Will Break Your Heart, and Then I Will Kill You.” I had a hell of a time going through it like a motherfucker during the process and the year leading up to Its release. You can hear the pain; I’ve had people tell me they can’t listen to it because it’s so depressing, but it’s not in all seriousness. It’s what got me out of committing suicide.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
There’s not much I like about our city; I never really have since being born and raised here; what I like least besides the obvious treacherous heat through half of the year is most of the people that reside here. Mind you. I have been to Los Angeles and other parts of California several times, but I have never had the opportunity to live here, so I’m not sure if it’s the city or what. Still, people are entitled, privileged, disrespectful, hypocritical cowards for more than the most part. And they’re not to your face with it; they’re passive-aggressive behind your back, two-faced, and for no reason other than they’re mad that it’s hot outside. I’m getting off track here, but you know.
I like that despite it being in literally the worst, generally unlivable climate in the world relatively speaking, people kinda just said fuck it and tried anyway. The horrors of colonialism, manifest destiny, and the exploitative nature of the US government and capitalism’s crimes against humanity and nature, nice. We’re still all fucked but at least we get some dope music while we all ride the sinking ship. What I don’t like is that sometimes people are lames who just judge and hate people as well as fun, and it rubs off on others, and I’m just here fuckin taking it day by day. Life’s too short for that kind of bullshit. Nothing matters but what you want to matter in the end. Also fuck the police, forever.
