Conversations with Charlie Truax

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Truax.

Hi Charlie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a 21 year old self taught artist who on instagram goes by the name Chach Art. I’ve always been fascinated with art. Since before I could walk, I would draw on the walls and couches of my childhood home. I’ve always loved comic books and movies so I would always take inspiration from those. As I grew up and started getting better, I would draw spider-man any chance I got. In more recent years, I’ve been filming and editing short form content trying to make a name for myself. I still create with any free time I can grasp. I own tons of sketchbooks using different mediums, some finished and some I am still filling out. I’ve done a few commission pieces and have made appearances at elementary and High school art shows. I’m grateful to have the support from family and close friends. They have always believed in me and my art. I thank god everyday for giving me the gift to create and to inspire others to do the same.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s never an easy thing to get your name out into the public. Everyone uses social media to promote themselves, even me. I always tell myself to post and don’t worry about the views or likes. Just post for the joy of it. There have been bumps in the road for sure. I went a couple months last year without drawing or doing anything creative (We call this Art block). I work a full time job, so it’s hard to make time to practice. I have a few unfinished commissions that I still need to get to at some point. Overall I’m pretty happy with where I am in my art career and I look forward to creating more pieces in the future.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I mostly draw with fine line ink pens, making black and white drawings with crosshatching and thick or thin lines. I really enjoy taking inspiration from comic book artists Jim Lee and Gabriele Dell’Otto as artists I strive to draw like some day. I’ve delved more into painting in the past year or so. It’s definitely a challenging medium when you first start but, it has gotten a bit easier to say the least. I always bring a small carry on sketch book with me everywhere I go, with either a pen or a sharpie and I’ll just draw whatever comes to mind or any references I can find on Pinterest. I have a real passion for making comic book art. About a year ago, I painted a Marvel Secret Wars Cover on a large canvas using acrylic paint. It is one of my favorite pieces I have done thus far in my career. I have done two tattoo commission pieces, but I am no tattoo artist, I leave that to them. It is something I am very interested in doing in my future art career. I’ve always been fascinated with the human skeleton. Each bone having a specific purpose making up the structural part of the human body. I am Mexican/Columbian and Dia de los Muertos is a huge part of my culture. Skulls have always interested me for years I’ve mostly perfected drawing them from memory. It is one of my favorite things to draw for sure and it’s what I am known for on my socials. I think what sets me apart from other artists is my ability to see something and immediately know how I would draw it. I get a kick out of going to Museums and taking photos of what I can draw, whether its head busts, sculptures, or even old renaissance paintings. I just recently went to Seattle and there were these head busts of animals made of gold and I just knew I could use them. I hope in the future I find new mediums and I can use my talents to incorporate them in my art.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Everything you create matters. I feel as if social media has this norm for artists to compare themselves to others. You should create what you want. Comparison destroys personality. Art has no rules, no playbook, no instruction manual. Art is whatever you make of it, whatever you want it to be. As a 21 year old artist, the most valuable lesson I’ve learned is that I was created to create. Sometimes you just have to find the art in everything. Art is my therapy.
