Today we’d like to introduce you to Bleu Fitz. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Chateau Chateau was formed in 2018 and led by me (Bleu) and Alex. Although we were strangers at first, we quickly realized we made a like-minded power duo. We turn traditionally ugly, abstract, and leftover things into new, shiny, extravagant forms.
The two of us had similar upbringings, battling mental illness, addiction, and trauma, and immediately knew we could make beautiful art together. We quickly released our first single, Crisis Party, which overnight got picked up by playlists like Spotify’s Discover Weekly and New Music Friday. We rode that wave and released our debut EP, ‘Evidence’. We were writing intensely dark lyrics but contrasting them with upbeat, danceable, synth-pop music.
Our songs continued to pick up motion and as we started performing them live, people loved our look. On stage, we always dress in glam rock-inspired sequins and glitter, while setting off confetti cannons. A handful of dancers interact with props, like giant gay pride flags, and dance cool choreo. Alex sometimes even pulls out his drag persona for shows. I really cared about reaching out to our LGBTQ+ audience, as I’ve been through some really unfortunate trauma surrounding my sexuality and identity.
We continued to grow and in 2021, we signed to the legendary label Kill Rock Stars. Instantly we began working on our upcoming album “Grow Up” to be released on May 6, 2022. After being encouraged to open up and get more specific in my writing, I lyrically took the lead and went all in and dedicated each song to a different person, trauma, addiction, mental illness, that in some way shaped me during my formative years.
On the raucous lead single, “I Don’t Love You Anymore,” I took a stand against my father by quoting him word for word in the chorus. And in our upcoming single ‘Pray’ (out April 28) I talk even more specifically about our relationship as well as my experience being brought up in the church and being pushed out, seemingly for being too individualistic and queer.
Alex and I have had a blast working side by side, using our opposite strengths to our best advantage. I love getting to connect with people and fans in person and online (especially on TikTok) and fulfill my passion for songwriting and performing. There is a lot more to come for Chateau Chateau.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I always talk about how lucky I feel in this sense because Chateau has been such a smooth ride.
We do put in long days and tons of hard work, but really we haven’t had any major obstacles. Which is a nice contrast to my life prior to this band.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
By day, I am a professional tattoo artist.
I’ve been tattooing for almost a decade and I absolutely love it. Between this art and music, I couldn’t choose one over the other. I’ve also been able to take tattooing on tour, making art on a few people at each stop. My favorite style to tattoo is anything with bold lines and solid color.
I’m definitely a traditional tattooer and carry on the values and respect of the artists before me. I plan on making a ‘Chateau’ themes flash sheet to offer at our merch table at certain shows, which I don’t think anyone has really done before!
What’s next?
This year is our busiest one yet, we just returned from playing South by Southwest and are prepping for our next Festival in May, Pure Imagination.
This is right after our album release on May 6, so we have big plans for this show, as it will be our first time playing most of our new songs. Alex and I have also made some changes to our shows in order to make them better and better.
We are planning more shows and tours for this year as well, but I can’t say too much just yet! For now, we are really focusing on releasing “Grow Up,” and sharing it with the world. It’s our first time releasing vinyl records as well!
