Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Meyer.
Hi Ben, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been interested in what makes people tick. I am a graduate of the Ohio State University and majored in psychology. In 2012, I had the opportunity to move to Arizona and took advantage.
That led me to Ottawa University’s Master’s degree in Professional Counseling, and about 10 years after starting that journey, I was able to open my own business in April 2021 as a professional therapist.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Waiting on the Arizona board to verify my credentials was the hardest part.
Altogether, that took 15 months. Initially, it took six months to get approved as an associate counselor, and then nine months to get approved independently. I had to learn to be patient and resilient as a result. I also took a two-year detour to get another Master’s degree, this time in philosophy from Louisiana State University. I figured while I was at it, I would continue trying to learn new things.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
For 10 years, after graduating college, I worked in the finance industry. I worked for a major bank in sales, primarily. This helped form my identity and kept me grounded.
The struggle financially eventually pushed me to jump off a bit of a cliff, and then learn to fly afterward. Looking back, taking chances to advance my career paid off. Now, I like to study Lacanian psychoanalysis in my spare time, learning from people more capable than I am has become a lifelong passion.
What’s next?
I’ve dabbled with expanding my business this year, and plan to continue that into the future. Part of the plan includes making some financial gains in order to pay off some pretty significant student loan debts!
Once I get situated financially, I might like to ultimately collect cars. I have an affinity for early-model BMWs and I’ve recently begun appreciating mid-century architecture, I may also work toward some real estate investing.
