Today we’d like to introduce you to Ayleen Ortiz.
Hi Ayleen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The name “Boss Beauty by Ayleen” came from brainstorming with my husband to find a catchy name for my business. So I asked, “what does everyone want to be?” I thought of a celebrity, a pro athlete, or a business owner. I wanted to come up with a name that would drive people with the same mentality as me, into my business. Before I decided to follow my dream, I worked an 8-5. I knew it wasn’t what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I spent a couple of months doing overtime. I would clock in at 5 am and clock out around 6 pm. I had no time for my family or myself. It drained me and pushed me to go for what I dreamed of. Beauty was my biggest interest growing up. The skin was so fascinating. It’s the biggest organ in the human body. We all want beautiful skin. We are very judgmental when it comes to our skin.
I wanted to help others feel beautiful. After a couple of years of debating whether it was finally the right time, I started doing some research on beauty schools. I came across a few but The Studio Academy of Beauty stood out for the way they help students complete the program and create a business plan. I then graduated from The Studio Academy of Beauty as an Esthetician. I had very inspiring instructors who I will always be thankful for, that was Ms. D and Mrs. Franny. I have created friendships with amazing beauty gurus along the way. There is so much room for success when it comes to beauty. I have the best support from my family, friends, and clients. My only plan is to keep going and keep growing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The struggles I mostly faced were mental. I had worries about whether my business would grow. If I’d have a high client return rate. If I was making the right decision on quitting a corporate job to start a business and follow my dream.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
After graduating from The Studio Academy of Beauty as an esthetician I learned that the work you put in outside of school is what is most important.
The dedication you put into your craft is what sets you apart. I specialize in lash extensions, facials, eyebrows, and waxing. I put a lot of work into my craft, I am a perfectionist and that’s what sets me apart.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I had bad luck the first year I tried to enroll at Gateway Community College for their Esthetics program. I was put on a waitlist to start. I contacted the school once I felt that too much time had gone by without me receiving a phone call or email about starting the program.
When I contacted them, the new head director told me they had gotten rid of the wait list and moved to first come first serve without telling those on the waitlist. So I wasted a year of being able to start.
