Today we’d like to introduce you to Asha Taitt.
Hi Asha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always had a deep mind. In second grade, I took a picture of my classmate’s hands and titled it “Color.” It was about inclusivity and togetherness. But my true journey began in my 10th grade year of high school. However, 11th grade was when my photo teacher required me to build a portfolio full of personal projects, and that’s when I took my work outside of the classroom. Since then, I’ve been in numerous competitions and gallery shows.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. It took me years to find my style, and I gained some traction amongst my peers when I did. But I still struggle to get my art to reach a larger audience. I’ve always had beginner equipment, but as I’ve become more polished, it’s started to work in my favor. But honestly, what’s a good story without a bumpy road? I’ve started embracing my present artistry and the journey that comes with it because I know something big is coming.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I consider myself a cinematic photographer. I story tell through my work, with my main goal being to evoke emotion. I’m known for my vulnerability and my deep understanding of the human experience. I’d say I’m most proud of my recent work that I showcased at a gallery show in New York City. While I’m not a New York resident, I took a leap of faith and traveled there just to show my work to a larger audience. I felt validated and seen by people who didn’t have to validate or see me at all. What sets me apart from others is my execution style. There’s always a meaning behind my work and it creates this shock factor that lingers in people’s minds.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I will always credit my 11th-grade photo teacher Lillian Chun. She saw something in me. It started with class prompts and then my work would be shown to the whole class and then she began entering me into competitions. She made me realize that this is my calling and that was very emotional for me because I’ve always just been an athlete. Now I’m doing this work because I love it and she’s the reason for that. I’d be crazy not to also mention my Mother, father, and little sister as well. They have always been my first set of eyes on new work and telling me how it makes them feel. It lets me know if I’m headed in the right direction–plus my parents bought me my first camera, so I really owe them everything.
