Today we’d like to introduce you to Anjelica Guzman.

Anjelica Guzman

Anjelica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Howdy everyone! My name is Anjelica Guzman and I am a Phoenix based graphic designer, artist, and educator. My journey into graphic design wasn’t entirely linear, but it ultimately led me to where I am today. A few years back, while taking a break from school, I discovered a love for creating and selling digital art prints. This experience sparked a deep interest in visual communication, and a friend introduced me to this magical concept of graphic design. The potential to use design as a career to connect and inspire people excited me. With newfound passion and clarity, I researched graphic design programs, applied to Arizona State University’s visual communication design program, and the rest is history!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been smooth, but I am thankful for the challenges because growth happens outside of comfort zones. Design can be draining and time-consuming, with constant comparison, critique, judgment, and imposter syndrome. Starting as an artist, I found it difficult to create for others and meet the required level of precision. I still struggle with the idea that my designs often contribute to a consumeristic and commercialistic society.

During university, I went through a rigorous design program that left me exhausted, affected my mental health, and strained my relationships. Unfortunately this experience is common among design students. It inspired me to pursue a different path in education, leading to an opportunity to teach graphic design as adjunct faculty at ASU. Teaching has taught me a lot, and I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface. There is still so much to learn and many aspects of my craft to improve.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I currently work as a graphic designer for Extra Small Design, a dynamic team specializing in web design, development, and UI/UX. Our passion extends beyond that to include logo design, branding, print materials, and more. Additionally, I teach freshmen at Arizona State University.

What sets me apart from others is my passion for problem-solving. I thrive on challenges, and the most satisfying solutions involve creativity and design. While design can sometimes feel consumeristic, it also has the power to inspire and solve real problems.

In all honesty I am most proud of finishing school and earning my degree. I dropped out of school twice, and it truly was a challenge for me to graduate. As a second generation Mexican American my parents had always dreamed of watching my little brother and I walk across the stage and the fact that my parents got to see me do that means the world. It was particularly special that my mom completed her bachelor’s degree just before I earned mine. A degree may seem like a small feat to some, but for me, it was monumental. Love you, Mom and Dad!

What matters most to you? Why?
The most important aspect of my life is my relationships with friends and family. While jobs, circumstances, and skills may change over time, the value of shared experiences and connections with loved ones is priceless. At the end of the day, I’d rather be remembered for the quality of my relationships than my professional accomplishments.
