Conversations with Alyssa Bain

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Bain

Hi Alyssa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always loved photography, but I had major imposter syndrome and didn’t study it in school, so I never thought I could make a career out of it until I was in my mid-twenties. I worked management jobs for other people and over the course of time realized I really wanted to work for myself; but how? My husband and I moved to Colorado in 2016. Eventually I convinced my sister (also a photographer) to move to the state as well, and we decided to work together on building a photography company. We had no reason to think we’d be able to make it aside from our optimism and work ethic, but over the course of a few years we built a photography/videography team and shot weddings all over the state! In 2021, my husband and I moved to Arizona to be closer to family, and I started my own company – Alyssa Bain Photography. I’ve now been a professional photographer for almost 10 years, have shot over 400 weddings, and continue to absolutely love what I do. Bonus: my sister still shoots with me sometimes when she visits!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been the opposite of a smooth road, actually! I had to learn how to handle every aspect of owning a company with very little prior experience on my own two feet – marketing, accounting, customer service, technology, damage control, sales, business management, employing others, not to mention grueling days of shooting for up to 12 hours at a time, sometimes. I learned SO much through all of the hardships I’ve faced, more so than all of my successes, for sure. I’d say the biggest struggle is sort of in line with that saying – “with great power comes great responsibility”. It’s amazing owning your own business and being your own boss, but I’ve also had to face every roadblock and struggle largely by myself and overcome obstacles with little to no help, at times. It’s a LOT of responsibility and it all falls on my shoulders, so when I do make mistakes, I am super hard on myself. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer and business owner, specializing in weddings and elopements, family, boudoir, and engagement sessions. I’m known for my organic/candid shooting style and for my attention to detail; I spend 60-100 hours editing each wedding I shoot, meticulously correcting and enhancing each photo so that the finished gallery is as close to perfect as possible. I’m most proud of my editing expertise and style; it’s uniquely me, and it speaks to my level of work ethic and deep attention to detail. I also pride myself on being a “people person”; I LOVE working with others, and am able to achieve my photography goals by ensuring my clients feel their most comfortable in a scenario that isn’t always relaxing. It can be uncomfortable to have someone taking photos of you when you’re not sure where to put your hands, how to pose, or what to do with your face; I make sure it’s a fun and easy experience!

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I live in Phoenix, Arizona with my husband Bill, our dog Winnie, and our cat Otto. I love photography, books, yoga, hiking, crafting, good food, and spending time with family and friends. I am a huge animal lover and always encourage clients to bring their pets with them on their photoshoot!
