Conversations with Alexis Avalos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Avalos.

Hi Alexis, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I started freelancing for different florists around Los Angeles / Orange County. There was one florist I would work with consistently, and she took me under her wing to teach me. I always knew I wanted to branch off alone- it was just about timing and confidence. I was still living in Los Angeles and slowly chipping away at my checklist, getting a name, branding, logo, etc. I had a friend help me with all the branding, creating a logo for me and specific color schemes that best represent a bit of who I am. From there, I started to take on projects of my own – decorating the interiors of Hollywood restaurants and working with local shops to make weekly in-store arrangements. It wasn’t until I moved back to my hometown, Tucson, that I fully gained the confidence to take Talk Soil To Me to the next level.

Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were many struggles, spending money, losing money, gaining money, losing money again, and not setting firm boundaries with clients & spaces – but that is all part of the process. I am fortunate to have a lot of support from my family and friends, who cheer on me along the way. It is always important to have those challenges from there; I root, I grow, and I say thank you for the lessons taught.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a florist in Tucson, AZ, known for using locally grown flowers and creating wild garden-like arrangements. Many of my arrangements are free – I love playing with tone and texture and allowing the flower to take up as much space as possible.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Everything I do is on my own. I need a team of people or financial backing to help cover my costs. I put my investments into my business, and while it is scary at times- it is the best feeling to know I am doing it all on my own. * Aside from my daily roots & toots from my family and friends. I write and draw each note, wrap each arrangement, and deliver every delivery in my little Subaru.
