Today we’d like to introduce you to ALEX OKAMI

Hi ALEX, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Alex Okami, a second generation Mexican-American Darkwave/post-punk artist born in Salinas California. I started singing at a very early age taking inspiration from family members I would see perform on stage. Growing up my family was very music oriented and filled with musicians. Fueling the fire and the confidence to make me believe I could do it too. After several bands that didn’t lead anywhere I started writing music with the intention on releasing it under a solo name. In 2020 I released my first EP to the world. Under the Same Moon – a collection of acoustic guitar driven songs that captured the emptiness, the sorrow, and loss I was experiencing at the time. The EP was released on CD, a very limited run of vinyl, and digital platforms. In the couple years that followed I found myself in bands that once again didn’t lead to much which is when I decided to bet and go all-in on myself. Now, in 2025, I’ll finally be releasing my debut album, Strange As Angels, to the world on March 20. Something I’ve been working toward for the last 2 years.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has never been smooth. There are always struggles and challenges all along the way, for me at least. Whether it’s experiencing writer’s block or not having the confidence in yourself to release your inner most feelings to world. When you make music from such a personal place, it’s difficult not to think about how the world will receive them. I do this first and foremost for myself – it’s what makes life worth it to me – but I can deny that sharing it with others is always the ultimate goal. Otherwise the songs would just live in my hard drive forever.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love writing music. My debut album, Strange As Angels, is something I’m incredibly proud of. So much work, so much sweat, blood, and tears went into making it. It’s definitely the culmination of years of learning. Learning about myself, song-writing, and life itself.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Start making music. Start writing songs. Whether it’s on a guitar, a computer, or writing lyrics – just do it. Don’t wait for anyone to help you start the process. It all starts with you. It all starts with your own fire inside.

And above all, if you put your heart and soul into anything you do, you WILL be successful.
