Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Joy Rozelle.
Vanessa Joy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a true Sonoran Desert girl. I was born in NYC, but my father moved our family out West when I was six, so I consider myself a native of Scottsdale. He was the head of tax for Phelps Dodge. They were the largest copper mining company in North America—second in the world. They’re now called Freeport-McMoran. Copper certainly gave me a privileged life. The move to Scottsdale—at six-years-old—definitely shaped who I am today. I acclimated to the heat easily, I fell in love with cacti and succulents and I love every travel adventure the 48th State has to offer (Sedona, Bisbee, Havasupai Falls, Fossil Creek, Flagstaff, Jerome… etc.) It was 13 years later that I began my foray into the Valley’s real estate sector. It’s funny, looking back, I was the kind of girl who idolized Paradise Valley luxury REALTORs®️ instead of pop stars. After college, I was fortunate enough to utilize my schooling into a successful journalism and public relations career. I’ve always been a writer, but never creative writing—which I admire so much—entertainment features are my knack. My writing has now been published both locally and nationally. I’ve had the pleasure of writing press kits, press releases, and bios for a lot of rad bands and stellar businesses. I’m so grateful for that. My creativity really came into fruition when I began styling local models for shoots and providing personal styling/shopping for clients. Life is too short to look basic! I will always be a fashion maven. Here in Arizona, I was able to build a formidable style portfolio. The fashion styling also lent to my home staging prowess. Really, in my mind, nothing compares to handing my clients the keys to their dream home. What I actually love most is negotiating for my real estate clients. I’m known as quite the shrew in the Scottsdale and surrounding areas market.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My journey was definitely not a cake walk and I think that’s why I value my business so much. Most people think of me as a wildly confident extrovert, but the reality is that I’ve had to fight internally through a lot of insecurities that were holding me back. The Scottsdale real estate market is so image-driven and I didn’t know if I ‘measured up’. But—finally—I realized that the naysayers’ opinions don’t matter. What matters is my talents and results—and I have proven them both. I’m lucky that being exceptional comes easy to me. Haha! But, seriously, I have definitely met so many great people who have kept me going. My clients are my biggest cheerleaders and they fight for me, even when I’m too stressed and worn to fight for myself. Also—my coach, mentor, partner and friend, Edyi, has had a huge impact on my career and just my way of tackling hurdles. Women definitely need to rely on and trust each other more. As do people, in general.
Really, we’re all hurtling through the cosmos on a rock together. Behind every great REALTOR®️/businesswoman/entrepreneur is a supportive village. Edyi, my husband, my family—especially my mom, Lillie— and my Keller Williams Sonoran Living Scottsdale family, are my village. I love it that we have women helping women in our market center. I was blessed to have someone who forced me out of my comfort zone. I think that’s the catalyst for anyone that wants to be successful in any field.
What should we know about Sonoran Joy Realty Group? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m most definitely known for my negotiation skills in real estate. I’m a lamb with my clients, but I’m a lion when negotiating their transactions. My clients are usually making the biggest purchase of their lives and I never take that lightly. People in my office call me the “Olivia Pope” of real estate because I’m a fixer. I get things done. I didn’t know how I felt about that nickname because I was never a huge “Scandal” fan, but now I’m proud of it and I embrace it. My clients come first. It especially makes me tear up when I have won a property for my clients—out of ten other offers—seeing them start to build their lives in said property?!? It always gets me.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
Women are: the creators, the birthers, the knowledge-seekers, the daredevils, the philosophers, the truth-tellers, the storytellers, the sleuths, the pioneers, the doulas, the chefs, the singers, the songwriters, the caregivers, the providers, the homemakers, the beauties, the athletes, the earners, the musicians, the artists, the scientists, the mathematicians, the matchmakers, the comedians, the justice warriors, the comforters, the sexpots, the schoolmarms, the nerds, the actresses, the diplomats, the fighters, the martyrs, the warriors, the royals, the paupers, the healed, the broken, the resilient. We, women, are all-encompassing. I’m very proud to be a woman.
