Conversations with the Inspiring Tina Marie Wilken

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tina Marie Wilken.

Tina Marie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been coaching since 2016, but started out as a Business Finance Coach, after leaving my bookkeeping business. You see, I wanted to help as many business owners keep their doors open because I kept seeing the same mistakes happen over and over again!

I was great at bookkeeping and business management. I had no problem getting clients for that. Yet, when I reached out to become a business coach, I couldn’t get myself to show up and create content, ask for the sale, or even price what I was worth. I was ALWAYS stressed out about how to make money to keep it afloat and felt like a complete fraud. How can I coach other people if I couldn’t get myself there. I had major impostor syndrome.

I could tell you how to handle your money, streamline your business, give you advice on tools, but what I was missing and noticed in my clients was… MINDSET. I learned that mindset is EVERYTHING!

I went on to learn as much as I could from successful millionaires and business owners, studied NLP, Mindfulness Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Positive Psychology and enrolled in coaching school to better serve my clients.

Since then, I’ve transformed my relationship with myself, my money, and my business and help other entrepreneurs to do so too!

Philanthropy is a huge part of my values and business model. I make sure to embody the best person I can be for myself, my family and friends, and my community. Which is why I dedicate 10% of my revenue to causes that truly matter to me and joined to grow a new nonprofit, BlackGirlFinMagic© that is dedicated to growing, supporting, and elevating women of color in the personal and business finance industry.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh man, definitely not a smooth road. Nothing ever great came easy, right? Like I said earlier, I really had to battle my own personal demons in order to get to the point I’m at right now. I also know the struggles of still working a job while building a business can be challenging.

If I could give any advice to women would be to treat yourself as if you are your best friend. We tend to have serious negative self-talk but we would never say that to a friend! We can’t pour from an empty cup. We need to be able to take care of ourselves in order to be of service to others and effective.

For young women that are just starting out, one thing I’d tell my younger self is that everybody’s path is different and to stop comparing themselves to where everybody else is at. It’s dangerous and what we see or hear on the surface is only the tip of the iceberg of their lives. Everyone goes through struggles, be grateful for what you have now and trust that all that you’re working towards will come to fruition.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m moved from Business Finance Coaching to directly be a Business Strategist that specializes in mindset, business finances, and clarifying your mission. I found so many small business owners and entrepreneurs strike out hoping to make six figures in six months (because that’s what everyone is promising) only to feel burnt out, frustrated and lacking in sales.

I’m most proud of my brand because I share my struggles in my entrepreneurship journey and share the lessons I learned to my tribe. I LOVE the fact that I talk about the things that other coaches don’t. There are some coaches out there that make entrepreneurship glamorous and flashy. I talk about the real gritty things about entrepreneurship but also the beautiful rewards that come out of my hard work. Profit Project truly is a passion for me to help others on the same journey.

BlackGirlFinMagic© is just an amazing space and I’m honored to be a part of it. It’s really rare to see so many women of color come together in a safe and supportive space to help each other grow. Although the name says black girl, we really truly want to include the LatinX, Hispanic, and Asian community because we know that we can just make a greater impact on reducing poverty and educating the public on financial literacy when we work together. I can’t wait to see where we are in three years.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
Oh, wow. My list is just too long but I’ll narrow it down to my top few. First, my mom. We’ve had a tough relationship but she’s always taught me resilience, resourcefulness, and to always to strive to be my best at all times.

Honestly, I’m inspired by all women who are apologetically strong, independent, and compassionate. I follow women like Cara Alwill Leyba of The Champagne Diet, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Zoe Saldana are just a few. What I love about them is they share their weaknesses, their true selves but never compromise on their values and integrity. They’re willing to speak up when it is needed and unapologetic about it.

I’m honestly in awe of the amazing women in my everyday life that may not have a million followers and known worldwide. They honestly continue to inspire me every day because I know I can keep making an impact.
