Conversations with the Inspiring Tekoa Hash

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tekoa Hash.

Tekoa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started out in New York City as a professional makeup artist. Within 2 years of me working in the entertainment industry, I decided to go full-time freelance. As a creative, I had a strong desire to not be held within the confines of a corporate beauty makeup setting. And once experiencing the adrenaline rush of working in television, it was stifling for me to work in any other type of environment. After 10 plus years as a successful working makeup artist, I felt the need to switch gears and work in a vain that would better serve me as a natural born leader, as well as my makeup and hair counterparts whom I believed in. No longer wanting to give in to the mantra, that hair and makeup are to be seen and not heard on sets, I decided to reposition myself as an authority figure where my voice and value was appreciated.

I decided to open up TEKNIQUE to offer opportunities and support to so many other amazing hair and makeup people who had not had the opportunities that I had experienced in my career. Mona Scott Young was the first client that supported my efforts to start my own agency. I found that all of my clients respected my decision to transition my career and continued to trust me to provide them with the right talent for their individual projects.

Booking hair and makeup artists are not just about sending the best but really considering the climate of each environment that we place them in. It is truly a matchmaking service and we work diligently to place our roster in the right environments with always keeping our clients needs at the forefront of our minds.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road. I knew nothing about running a business when I started. I was still working in the field either as a producer or makeup artist to make ends meet and to feed my creative outlets. I started with no working capital which made it hard for us to scale due to limited resources. With every hurdle that TEKNIQUE has endured, the need to dig a little deeper to figure it out has always proven to be a great learning lesson. Entrepreneurs often compare the highs and lows to a roller coaster ride.

In having big disappoints, I have learned not to panic, and to realize by facing the issues head-on, that it is never as big as it first appears. “This too shall pass” is what I tell my inner voice whenever defeat seems to creep into my mind.

The best advice I can give anyone is to remain consistent and steadfast. Even when it seems it’s not working, no one is noticing your hard work, or you aren’t meeting your financial goals. Knowing what your mission and vision are, will help you stay the course to fulfilling your dreams and becoming successful. Consistency is key

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Teknique Group – Full-service premiere glam agency with a concentration in tv and film story. Tell us more about the business.
We make dreams come true every day at TEKNIQUE. It is so fulfilling to be able to employ working artists in the industry where they can support their families and nurture their talents and creativity. We are a full-service premiere glam agency with a concentration in tv and film.

We are the one-stop shop for staffing huge projects. We maintain schedules and budgets that work for our clients. instead of having to call 20 different people to staff a job, one phone call to Teknique alleviates the burden of manning so many people for a project. Which has consistently proven to be cost-effective and timely for our clients.

with the ongoing success of many of our hair and makeup gurus, we have been able to manage brand partnership deals by aligning them with the brands that speak to their individual aesthetics.

I am most proud that God gave me a vision and placed me in the right areas to nourish them.

What sets us apart is our hands-on approach on both the client end and the artist end. We are in the process from beginning to end, ensuring that clients are pleased, rates are competitive and that we are bringing back repeat business.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
This list is so long, but I must start with my mother. She supported my creative side from the very beginning. She encouraged me to always walk to the beat of my own drum, to never take no for an answer, and to remember who my source is, God.

Maya Angelou – She was a chameleon, she didn’t settle for one title, one job, one purpose. She lived fully and created avenues for herself where she could use all of her gifts, and not just one. I want to use every gift and passion that God instilled in me.

My Grandmother – Walk in Love. in this very cutthroat industry, it is easy to become bitter and nasty. I have had to learn to love regardless of whether the love was reciprocated. The ability to be able to forgive others has allowed me the freedom to continue moving forward.
