Thanks for sharing your story with us Sophie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began arranging flowers as a hobby in 2011, around the time, my second daughter was born. I’ve always enjoyed having fresh flowers in my house, and it was an easy creative outlet at the time. Once in a while, I’d have friends ask me to create something for a party, holiday or gift, and it was during that period I began considering floral as more than a hobby.
In 2017, I opened a gifting business that would incorporate flowers, but within a year, I realized I was more passionate about the floral aspect than the retail goods side. In January of 2019, I relaunched, streamlining our services to daily floral deliveries. We offer one weekly design using the season’s best flowers, and clients select their preferred size and style (Wrapped or In a Vase). We deliver Monday through Friday, throughout the Greater Phoenix Area.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It took me a while to hone in on what exactly I wanted my business to look like and the services I wanted to offer. I try to learn something new about the business each day, whether it’s specific to the floral industry or entrepreneurship in general. It’s amazing what you can learn through either the internet, reaching out to other small business owners, or some creative trial and error. Constantly work on improving your craft; whether through daily practice, continuing education, or learning from past mistakes.
What should we know about Sophie’s Florals? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Sophie’s Florals is an online-based flower delivery service in Phoenix, Arizona. We offer same-day service and deliver all throughout the Greater Phoenix area including Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Tempe, Glendale, and parts of the East Valley.
Our goal is to create an easy, affordable way of ordering unique, beautiful flowers. Part of how we achieve this is by offering a simplified menu: we offer one design each week using the season’s best flowers, and the client gets to select their desired size and finishing option of having their flowers wrapped in paper or arranged in a vase. We focus on using garden-style flowers that may not be readily available in a grocery store or traditional flower shop, and we put a lot of effort into the overall design and presentation of each bouquet. Many of our clients opt to have their flowers wrapped in paper, which has a sophisticated market-style aesthetic to it. I think there’s something special in receiving a big, happy bundle of wrapped flowers.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
We’re lucky to have such amazing female entrepreneurs and leaders paving the way in Phoenix. There is a remarkable community of women here doing incredible things with their businesses, whether retail, hospitality, events, food, the arts, you name it. The women I’ve been fortunate to connect with have been nothing but warm, supportive, and sincere. They’re candid in their endeavors but their business acumen and grit are real. We have so much to learn from them.
