Conversations with the Inspiring Shivaun Carter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shivaun Carter.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hi, I’m Shivaun. I am from California, the oldest of four children. Being the oldest, I was frequently taking care of my younger siblings. I grew up playing sports, especially soccer and was occasionally injured and in the athletic training room. I remember that it was so difficult to be injured and not know how to help yourself feel and do better, really a helpless feeling. I think this is where I started my passion for helping others but also being able to teach them to help themselves.
Fast forward, I now live in Phoenix, Arizona. I am a physical therapist working part-time in the hospital setting and manage a household of two young boys, a dog, a cat, and my hubby, of course. I started my essential oil and wellness educator business with Young Living Essential Oils just over one year ago.

I have been using essential oils for over four years now to help make my family healthier and clear our home of toxins. I really got into using them more once I was pregnant with my second son, Clayton. I kept thinking to myself that there are so many “restrictions” on products and food you can eat when pregnant, but maybe I should ALWAYS be avoiding those things. I did a lot of research before I chose Young Living and was really impressed with their commitment to pure essential oils, supporting the community and Earth. Therefore, I turned to Young Living Essential Oils for natural and better alternatives that would support a healthier lifestyle and improve our well-being. As soon as we got our starter kit, I made a “sleepy” roller for my older son, Jackson, which truly helped him get the rest he needed without waking up multiple times at night. And as you know with little kids, getting uninterrupted sleep is hard to come by! It is amazing how these oils support what your body needs naturally. Now I reach for Young Living essential oils and products with confidence that I am keeping my family’s mind and body healthy and supported. So I decided to start my business as an essential oil and wellness educator and distributor. I truly enjoy helping others start this new path and am thrilled to be a part of their journey to better health and wellness. With this business, I have been able to spend more time with my kids and with less shifts in the hospital so I am not missing those important moments together. I get to work from home in smaller increments during school and nap times, as I empower others to do better with their wellness. And the community I have found with this business is incredible. So many new friends and team members that are all here to lift each other up.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road. There are times that I have put so much time and effort into an event or class to have literally one person show up. Or I continue to follow up with people who are interested in essential oils and plant-based products and get ‘no’ after ‘no’ so it can be difficult to stay motivated and on track. But you have to remember that success does not happen overnight. It takes consistent hard work. Planting “many seeds” and following up with friends has produced new team members and growth in my business. When I was first starting, I kept hearing over and over that people need to trust you before they trust your product. And I have seen that this is definitely true so you have to be sure to showcase yourself and be a “product of the product.”

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into your Essential Oils and Wellness Educator story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a physical therapist working in the hospital setting, helping people who are critically ill for various reasons, regain their strength and mobility so they can get back to their daily lives. I have taken this background with my clinical doctorate in physical therapy, now into my essential oil and wellness educator business with Young Living Essential Oils. I have spent countless hours studying the body, including anatomy and physiology, mobility patterns, and healthy behaviors. I incorporate this knowledge base now into helping others find and maintain a healthier lifestyle and well-being. I am an essential oils and wellness educator but what sets me apart from others is that I thoroughly understand the body and how these essential oils and plant-based products interact with the body. I advocate and empower others to take control of their wellness with better and more natural products in their homes and for their body. And also, provide support for others to start their own business so they can have more financial freedom and spend their time the way they really want to on a daily basis.

For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
There are so many opportunities for women today that only we can do well! We don’t have to spend time in an office all day to get a paycheck and provide for ourselves and our family. We are awesome at multi-tasking and have a strong ability to think outside the box. That’s why I know that multilevel marketing companies are an incredible opportunity for women. They provide women a creative and empowering outlet, with the ability to find solutions to “pain points” for others, while making money from home. And the start-up costs are minimal!
