Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheila Shervey.
Sheila, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
There are so many different stories I could tell about how I’ve arrived where I am right now. I’ve been a therapist for ten years and really since the beginning I knew I wanted to work with women. I love women! I love listening to their stories and finding new stories that haven’t been told yet.
After 12 years of living in Los Angeles, my family and I moved to Scottsdale last August. One reason for the move was the intention I had of creating a space for women. I believe so strongly that women need their own space and time to reflect, be still, come together and process. One Breath Healing is the culmination of my long-held desire to hold space for women.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have tried to start businesses several times and what I would find myself up against was my own self. I only have a certain amount of energy, time, willingness… and I found it challenging to create a business with those resources which often felt limited. It was like there was a secret code for starting a business that I didn’t yet have. When I moved here and I set out to create what became One Breath Healing the process felt different. I was very aligned with myself and what I wanted. I was at a stage in life where I was professionally and financially able to withstand the risk of starting a new business. I was determined to manifest a business even if something didn’t make complete sense as I was doing it. I have a small circle of trusted people I consult with when I need guidance. And I looked for signs from the Universe to let me know I was headed in the right direction.
What should we know about One Breath Healing? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I help women find freedom in their lives. Freedom from anxiety and depression. Freedom from the emotional stress of infertility and postpartum mood imbalances. Freedom from childhood traumas and patterns that aren’t working in adult relationships. I work with women across the lifespan. Most of us have areas in our life where we don’t feel completely free. We get stuck in old ways of being that don’t serve us. I use a holistic approach to guide women in discovering new stories and new ways of being.
As a Women’s Holistic Psychotherapist I combine mindfulness, talk therapy and work collaboratively with other practitioners to offer a multi-path approach to healing. I believe that getting to know your pain and freedom around it often requires people to engage in multiple healing modalities. I offer an opportunity for people to explore what works for them and in their own time.
One Breath Healing offers a Women’s Meditation Group that meets on Tuesday evenings and a monthly meditation group that meets the first Wednesday evening of the month. Both experiences are a wonderful way to learn and deepen your meditation practice. We also offer mindful movement, meditation & acupuncture, psychotherapy, special workshops, and women’s gatherings.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
This may sound odd but I think, in part, what makes me a good therapist is that I was an anxious and sensitive child. I spent most of my life figuring out ways to hide my sensitivity, not wanting others to know that I felt so scared and overwhelmed by life.
I figured out a really good way to hide too – I just did MORE! Even as a child, I could sense that doing more and doing for others at the cost of yourself was valued. This carried into adulthood- doing more, drinking more, eating more, doing things to make other people happy, ensuring in my own mind that others liked me, not resting when I needed to, not saying “no,” when I didn’t want to do something. Sound familiar? My awakening came as an adult with an adult-sized panic attack. It was the hardest, scariest time of my life but it was the best thing that ever happened to me. Having panic attacks lead me to find mindfulness and meditation and the extreme anxiety forced me to wake up and look at my life differently.
Not honoring what you need and want is one of the biggest problems women face. So many of our health problems stem from this issue. We all have the choice to wake up to how we are living and get to know both the wanted and unwanted parts of ourselves. I’m here to help with that.
