Conversations with the Inspiring Rose Courtney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rose Courtney.

Rose, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I got started over 20 years ago with the vision to help people regain their health through fitness training, nutrition in a setting outside of a gym. I have always been an independent trainer who believes that one doesn’t need expensive machines in order to have great health. What I teach to my clients is functional fitness, how to keep weight off, how to build bone and muscle mass and how to be healthy from the inside out.

I’ve recently added therapeutic massage, which is a perfect fit for my clients.

Has it been a smooth road?
Challenges would be the ebb and tide of fluctuating business. There are cycles of busy seasons as well as slow ones. Knowing these ahead of times allows me to work harder before the slower season starts to get a cushion together for financial obligations.

Challenges of getting a client to believe that change can happen at any age or any time. It takes action, repetition, consistency, knowledge, belief in oneself.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into FBR Fitness and Therapeutic Massage story. Tell us more about the business.
Being self-employed is the only route for me. I make my own hours, take off when I want and choose my location and days of work. That being said, I don’t have paid vacation, sick days, a company paid insurance, etc.

I specialize in working on the weakness of my clients and making them strong. Everyone always wants to do what is easy for them. It’s human nature.

I also help my massage clients in that many of them end up doing fitness training as well. This enables them to strengthen the areas that are out of alignment or in pain.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
People stereotyping and prejudging what a fitness trainer and massage therapist really do in their day to day jobs. Each one is so different, just like every vocation. Keep trying to find the one that fits your needs.
