Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Kehres.
Nicole, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey as a photographer, started the year I became a mom! I received a great starter camera when my son was born so that I could capture everything about him. At first, my images were terrible, I mean by anyone’s standards! I decided to take a couple classes with a friend to learn more. Once I had the bug, we started K&K Photography specializing in photo booth events with quality images. This led to more practice and eventually I branched out on my own to start Nicole Leann Photography in 2016. I opened a new studio, started specializing in maternity, newborn and family photography and the rest has yet to be written!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think for most business owners there are bumps. I had a lot of learning to do about photography in general and one of those things was that I can always learn more. The hardest part was just finding the confidence to put me out there for the world. Sharing your art is kind of like sharing your soul.
Be able to take criticism of your art. Have a good support system. It takes a TON of time away from your family, so if you are serious about it then make sure your family and friends will be supportive of your new ideas, help promote you and be your test subjects – I hit the jackpot on this one.
What should we know about Nicole Leann Photography? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in maternity, newborn and family photography. I have a studio in Scottsdale just a couple of blocks east of Scottsdale Quarter. I absolutely love to capture families as they grow and change and I think what sets me apart is that most of my clients feel like friends. I love creating a relationship with clients that last beyond the photo session and into real life. Seeing clients out and about and chatting or even just keeping up with them through social media, I really love watching their families evolve.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
One-on-one mentoring is hands down the best way to learn. Find a photographer willing to let you shadow them and be willing to pay for it! I flew to Utah for a couple of days for some of the best training I have had for my newborn photography. I now consider her a friend and ongoing mentor. Since then, I have joined a few networking groups and lots of online groups to further gain critical knowledge and ask for feedback.
