Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Wiederhold.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Michelle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always been looking for a way to be creative while being able to stay home with my kids. I love simple and dainty jewelry but could never find anything I liked that had the sayings I wanted on them. I decided to take up handstamping with the intention of making a few pieces for me and my friends. Then, the ideas started flowing and orders started coming in. I really enjoyed being able to make jewelry and housewares that were classic in style yet a little naughty as well. I like pushing the envelope but not all the way open. I’ve had a philosophy since the beginning that I will make pieces that are functional, affordable and fun.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road is starting to really smooth out but it did not start that way. I have always been an artist with other mediums and thought hand stamping was going to be quickly learned. To find out, it is a tedious process which takes a lot of patience. I gave up a couple times (only for a couple hours) because I was not used to dealing with such tiny instruments. My husband kept encouraging me and I started to get better. Now, thousands of cuffs later, I can say the road is smoother. My advice to anyone wanting to learn a new skill is to give yourself some grace. Know that if it was easy, everyone would do it. if you have a passion, keep working at it until you get it! Practice, practice, practice.
What should we know about Twig & Lace? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I make hand stamped jewelry and accessories. All my pieces are hand stamped one letter at a time by me. I specialize in cuff bracelets and cocktail stirrers. I also have wine charms, ornaments, keychains and pet tags. I’m known for my funny sayings and pushing the envelope. I am most proud of my customer service. I have always been in the service industry and have prided myself on making sure every customer knows how much I care about making their one of a kind piece.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I feel a huge barrier in today’s female leadership in the fact that I am a stay at home mom with a thriving business and am not taken seriously by most. Essentially, I hold down two full time jobs and I don’t feel like that is celebrated or embraced by some. I would like to be looked at as an entrepreneur and a stay at home mom and not a stay at home mom with a hobby.
