Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Hauersperger.
Megan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Right after high school, I went straight to college for Early Education, started teaching pre-k at the elementary school that I attended when I was younger. I taught for a few years, but I wanted something different. My sister threw out the idea of going to Cosmetology School. She’s always known I’ve loved styling hair. I thought it was a crazy idea to just leave a career I absolutely loved… well, I did it! I went to Penrose Academy here in Arizona. I had an amazing experience and met so many amazing people along the way. I love doing color and cuts, but I really had a passion for styling. I always was playing around with my hair when I was younger! After working in a normal salon for about six months, I left and worked at a blow-dry bar for about two years or so. Then, I wanted to be more out there, do more weddings or event hair, make my own schedule! So, for the last year, I’ve become a freelance hairstylist. I’ve done many weddings in the last few years, lots of prom hair, and even have clients I see weekly for a blowout! It hasn’t been easy and sometimes I struggle, but the look on all these ladies faces after their hair is done is all worth it! When you feel good about yourself, you can do anything! So, here I am! Half of the time, I don’t even feel like it’s work!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing in life is easy! You have to work hard for the things that you want! If was easy, then everyone would be doing it. Some days, I worry that I’m not busy enough or what the heck am I doing… but it’s those days where I get the best clients, or I make someone feel truly beautiful and then, I realize it’s all worth it! You have to put in the work that you want out of it. Ask other hairstylist questions, push yourself sometimes to get out of your comfort zone and know your worth!
What should we know about Hairbeautybymae? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My main focus as a cosmetologist is styling. I absolutely love doing wedding hair, prom hair, event hair, round brush blowouts and sometimes I will do extensions! I love how much I’ve grown in the last year or two, but I definitely want to keep growing into more! There’s not that many freelance artists for weekly blowouts or even for weddings. Most of the time, it’s from a salon which sometimes makes wedding days less personal for brides, I think.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
I’d say first, Jill Kohler (Owner of Penrose Academy) for letting me experience and educate myself in the hair world! Sometimes, I wish I could go back there! There are also a handful of ladies that I met at Penrose Academy that are so incredibly talented and are just taking off in the hair world! To some of them, it’s not about making money, it’s about what they do and what they do for others! That’s what stands out! If you can make someone truly feel beautiful, then you did your job! These women aren’t trying to compete with other hairstylist but do what they love! Not a lot of people can say they love what they do!
