Conversations with the Inspiring MaryLee Nickerson

Today we’d like to introduce you to MaryLee Nickerson. So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. Growing up, I was never too into makeup. I would see my Grandma put it on every Sunday morning before church but never grew fond of it until high school. I decided to dive into it about four years ago and it’s truly taken off! Initially, I watched dozens of youtube tutorials until I mastered my own face. Next thing I know, friends would ask me to do their makeup and I built a small clientele over a year which led me to finally get certified. Now, I specialize in weddings and monthly makeup classes with a flux of individual appointments every weekend.

Has it been a smooth road? Smooth? Not at all! There’s ups and downs for sure and not to mention trends always change. Every client you come across is different and has their own preference, so learning to cater to each individual client can be tough. Not to mention, times when business is slow.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Makeup By Mary story. Tell us more about the business. Natural Full Face makeup is my specialty. I enjoy nothing more than teaching others how to achieve the flawless makeup look. I hold monthly classes where I devote two hours to teaching ladies how to apply their makeup. I specialize in weddings, birthdays and any special occasion that you may need professional makeup services. I have a Mink Eyelash line that will soon be approaching a year old. Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be? Growing up in a single parent household and being the youngest, it gave me a lot of drive. My mom talked to me a lot about having “faith” and not giving up so it’s followed me with anything I put my mind to.
