Today we’d like to introduce you to Lina Chehayeb.
Lina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Canada, in a family of five. I’m lucky enough to have the most amazing parents and sisters that I could ever ask for. Throughout high school, I did a lot of dancing which eventually led me to try a Pilates class. I fell in love with it instantly and realized that I wanted to do something related to human movement/ exercise therapy. I did my Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology from the University of Alberta. Right after, I moved to Los Angeles to complete my Doctorate of Chiropractic Medicine. Chiropractic is not something I knew much about, I honestly just started the program because I thought it would be a great addition to what I already did. But there was SO much I didn’t know about chiropractic. I used to get really bad migraines. When a migraine would begin, it would last anywhere between 3-5 days and they would come every other week. When I didn’t have a migraine, I had what I would call a background headache. Essentially, a headache that was constantly there no matter what. I was an active person, I had a healthy diet and I had tried everything, even chiropractic care- or so I thought. I had gone to multiple chiropractors who would adjust my whole spine in every direction and it never gave me relief. It wasn’t until I saw a neurologically based chiropractor who focused on the dysfunctional joint in my upper cervical region that was creating a lot of pressure on my nerve causing the headache. Once he adjusted that one bone and moved it very specifically in one direction, my headaches went away and never came back. The fact that chiropractic care can impact the health of our nervous system is huge and when practiced specifically and with the proper analysis, we are able to restore optimal function to the body. That is what lead me to where I am now, I co-own and operate Pure Life Chiropractic.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I think with anyone opening up a new business, there are so many internal and external struggles to face and get through. Just to get the practice open and running was rough, as an example, we had a very hard time getting an SBA loan. We had to go from bank to bank presenting our business plan with rejection after rejection. Bank number 49 finally approved us. This took months and that delay in our plans meant more months without income which was also wasn’t easy. Every step of the way there was some type of delay or obstacle to overcome. These setbacks are mentally draining, you have to be constantly talking to yourself, pushing and reassuring yourself. Once we were finally up and running I had to face multiple obstacles that took so much of my time and energy away from our brand new practice. They were not related to our business in any way but inevitably when your mind is stressing about something else, your head isn’t in the game and that affected our business and stunted our growth.
Internal struggles are the hardest for me personally because they are always there. It’s partly just the pressure from wanting the business to grow and be successful, and partly wanting to please everyone, making sure no one has any negative experiences and wanting everyone to get amazing results! It is so easy to let the smallest thing- whether it’s someone or something, bring you down. My advice for anyone, but especially women who want to take that risk and start something new, would be to work on their mindset. Mindset is so important. It’s literally everything. Out of all the obstacles you will have to tackle, the limitations your mind puts on you are the hardest ones to overcome. Whether it’s fear of failure, fear of rejection, doubting your abilities or getting past your insecurities- these all come from within and what you tell yourself. It is not easy to change your mindset, it takes a lot of work but I think it makes the world of a difference in how far you can go.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Pure Life Chiropractic story. Tell us more about it.
We are a neurologically based chiropractic office, focusing primarily on the health of the nervous system. We know that the nervous system controls and coordinates every function of the body, it tells your heart to beat, your lungs to breath, your stomach to digest among many other things. Any stress or trauma on the spine leads to dysfunctional joints that create inflammation which puts pressure on the nerves. This can lead to many of the aches and pains that most people experience, but more importantly, it leads to dysfunctions in the body. We use some pretty awesome technology to do our neurological assessments. We do two evaluations that allow us to see how someone is functioning. The first one tells us how much inflammation is putting pressure on the nerves coming out of the spine. The second measures the electrical activity of the back muscles, which tells us how efficiently someone’s paraspinal muscles are working.
I specialize in pregnant moms, babies & kiddos. I am certified in Webster’s technique which is specific for pregnant moms. It prepares the pelvis for an easier pregnancy and birth by creating a state of balance in pelvic bony structures, muscles, and ligaments. My partner, Dr. Moses sees all the adults and athletes. I think what I am most proud of is our office vibe and culture. We truly love every single patient that comes through our door, they become our friends. We are very honest and we try our best to work with people financially. We have never had anyone come in who needed and wanted the care, walk out due to financial reasons. That really isn’t our goal or focus. We would rather help someone who needs it and takes a cut payment wise because that person will get amazing results and will then refer everyone they know to our office. That is a much bigger reward in our eyes.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I really enjoy listening to podcasts. The majority of them are educational- related to health and chiropractic. But there are a couple that is more motivational especially for business owners. One is called Entrepreneurs on Fire and the other one is called Goal Digger. Because I am a part of a BNI group, I also listen to The Official BNI Podcast which is great for learning how to network and also gives the advice to help grow your business. Other than podcasts, I really enjoy going to conferences or workshops that help inspire me and push me to the next level whether it’s work related or just bettering myself. I think those two go hand in hand, the more you work on yourself on a personal level, the more you will see the positive effects of that in your business.
