Today we’d like to introduce you to Kylee Eaton.
Kylee, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was 17, I begged my mom to let me get my GED so I could enroll in cosmetology school because I knew the traditional school route wasn’t for me. Luckily, I have the coolest mom and she let me enroll, and when I was 18, I graduated from cosmetology school. I was licensed shortly after that and then went on to be an assistant at two different salons but they weren’t the right fit for me. At that point, I started doubting myself and my craft, so I took a short break and it wasn’t long until I realized I belong in the hair industry, so I started looking around for somewhere with an amazing education team and room for me to continue growing and learning and then I found Juut!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road and I’ve hit some speed bumps but don’t let that discourage you and make you give up on your dream. For a while, I really doubted myself with my craft and decided it would be best for me to take a break. There is nothing wrong with taking a week off or even a month off to re-evaluate and take some time to yourself. Don’t compare yourself to other people’s journey is the most valuable piece of advice I can give, everyone is different.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I do hair! I am a color specialist and stylist at Juut in Tempe. I think I would be known for balayage, fashion colors and bobs/lobs, they’re my favorite to do especially when I can do them all together! I’m so proud of where I’ve come in the year I’ve been at Juut and to see how much I have grown. I stay very true to myself with my guests that sit down in my chair, there are always lots of laughs coming up from my station and I feel like I’m my true authentic self with my clients and I think that sets me apart, I also love talking astrology with my guests that are into I’d love to read your birth chart with you!
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I’d say the biggest challenge is the constant pressure in society to live up to a certain expectation and to always live up to the hype of everyone else’s standards. But making sure that you’re keeping true to yourself and checking up on your own self-confidence is so important in my industry, especially with the volume of talent all around you. Remembering you’re unique and putting your name on everything with no apologies is important, let all of the negative opinions of others go.
