Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Gresham.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started cosmetology school when I was 21 years old. Over the past ten years, I’ve worked very hard toward my career, getting as much education as possible and learning as much I can about my craft. I’ve also worked very hard as a single mother to my beautiful daughter. I work hard every day to give her not only the things she needs, but the love, compassion, and integrity I believe is necessary for life. I want to lead by example and show her anything is possible if you work hard enough. I want to show her it’s ok to be kind to others and to be humble, yet confident. I’m beyond blessed to be in a wonderful salon full of empowered, strong women, full of passion and ambition for life and our industry. I’m very excited for the future, to watch my daughter grow into a bright woman, and to reach for stars in my career every day!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I believe anything worth having in life is going to have many challenges and obstacles. Life wasn’t the easiest for my family, we didn’t have much, but I believe that gave me a sense of what’s really important. I barely made it through cosmetology school financially, constantly worrying about how I was going to make it. I would just sit there after working and going to school for 15+ hours every day, telling myself it was worth it. Telling myself I would look back and laugh, and be proud of making it through all the stress and bad days. I’m so glad, I did it! If you aren’t worried or terrified or stressed about all your hard work for your dreams, then it’s not as rewarding when you reach success. Be proud of yourself for making your dreams a reality, only you can do that for yourself!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for nine years, specializing in fashion colors and lived – in color. I’ve worked very hard to keep myself educated and up to date on trends. In my industry, as in so many others, my learning is a neverending journey. I absolutely love to learn and grow beside other like-minded stylists, evolving together as a team and as individuals. I love hair, and I love making people feel good about themselves. It’s such a great feeling to make someone see themselves in a new way, or maybe to make them see/feel like their old self again. I believe really loving what I do every day and making new connections with people is one of the most rewarding aspects of my life.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
I grew up with a traditional southern family that was based around love and family. Most women in our family stayed home and raised the kids, and took care of the home. I didn’t really want that life for myself, so I feel like that definitely drove me to work hard for a career as well as a family.
