Conversations with the Inspiring Kiara Townsend

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiara Townsend.

Kiara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Before I started photography as my career, I was inspired by Cole Bennett. He is the creator of Lyrical Lemonade based in Chicago where I am from originally. Bennett’s creativity and drive with local artists inspired me to get into digital arts and media although I already had an interest in them both; the only difference now is that I want to show the world my passion through my own camera.

Fast forward to September 2018 I created a new name for myself, Kiara “The Jerk” and was gifted my first real [film] camera. At the time I didn’t have experience with film but I wanted to try it out so for the next three months I went around taking grainy pictures of whatever or whoever I thought looked cool. Christmas came around and I bought myself a brand new Canon digital camera and everything changed — I shot with Members Only twice. Thanks to my friend Kaito, I also had the opportunity to shoot Azizi Gibson and Xavier Wulf.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I can’t lie photography is an art so it’s not something you master overnight but it did turn out to be easier than I expected, at least the photo taking part. The hardest part I’m experiencing so far is getting connected due to the fact that I work alone and don’t know too many people in Arizona. I also find myself running into the issue of being too hard on myself to be the best while I’m still learning.

A lot of photographers/videographers in the country are amazing at what they do so always fighting for that spot as one of the greats is something I always find myself doing.

My advice to young women in this particular field would be to focus on the road you are on and be confident in every step taken forward or backward. Take your time to learn and make mistakes.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am known for my photography, I specialize in portraits and event photography. People enjoy my landscapes although they are not my preference, I do them more for fun. I am currently working on doing more shows, meeting more people and providing shoots for local people who need/want pictures taken.

As a photographer, I am most proud of my constant growth and ability to go out and connect even more after every show. What sets me apart from others is the fact that I do not limit myself, I aim high and make things happen no matter what it takes.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
The biggest barriers today to female leadership in general is the fact that we may not be taken seriously and are constantly overlooked and or sexualized by males.
