Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Harney.
Katie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
“What’s that fluttering sound in her voice? Katie… honey, don’t do that, that’s weird,” mom says to my 3-year-old self. She took me to my first singing lesson at age five. Turns out, the “fluttering” was natural vibrato and is a desired skill! I was fortunate to vibe with music from an early age. And taking over 13 years of vocal instruction instilled some artistry.
If you’re thinking, “oh she has a band,” “when is she auditioning for The Voice,” just know, all singers are not alike. I was never eager to be on stage. Do I wish I was sometimes? Sure! Does that make me less of an artist? I certainly don’t think so. But I do know I’m using my talents wisely by helping others blossom. Being a Vocal Coach is rewarding and really fun. It’s the best career I’ve ever had. Music serves an enormous purpose in my life. I’m happy to make it my day-job and continue growing as an educator and creator.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My biggest struggle is the fear of failing. It’s absurd because failure is the predictor of success. Therefore, I’m learning to celebrate my failures. But, how do you even measure success? For me, it’s not always based on achievements or knowing exactly who you are. Success, in my book, is finding gratitude in the chaos.
“Success is never final, failure is never fatal.” ~John Wooden
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
In a nutshell, I help people find their voice. It goes beyond singing; it’s investigating self-expression and uncovering lost character. Our voice is a powerful tool that needs to be nurtured. When our voice obtains stability, it builds a bridge to our confidence.
I really appreciate my capability to bond and guide students of all ages! We’re brought together by this parallel love for music, which then arrives into friendship. It’s gratifying.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
My Voice Teacher introduced me to “a doctor, a scientist, & a modern-day mystic” named, Dr. Joe Dispenza. His mission is to help people heal themselves and evolve their conscience. I’m currently reading one of his best sellers, “Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself: How to Lose Your Mind and Create a New One.” It’s so easy to enslave ourselves to a label or believe we’re not worthy of success, love, or happiness. But, “if you can master suffering, you can just as easily master joy.” Cleaning out negative experiences produces a healthier brain and fruitful life. If I can correct false beliefs within myself, I can inspire students to do the same. “We’re at our absolute best when we can get beyond ourselves.”
