Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlin Meyers.
Kaitlin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My love for photography began while working at an advertising agency where I was responsible for planning and organizing photo shoots. After working in an environment full of creative people, I decided to give photography a shot. I bought myself a Nikon D3300 and began teaching myself the ins and outs of using a camera. I took a class at the Phoenix Center for the Arts, watched a ton of YouTube videos, learned from other photographers and began shooting for fun after work and on weekends. After a few years of shooting and collaborating with friends, I decided to launch a website and begin showcasing my work. I am now a freelance photographer specializing in lifestyle, product, food, events and portrait shots.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have definitely been learning curves and challenges. I struggled with comparing myself to other photographers, their styles, and their gear. I thought I should change my editing style to look more like popular photographers or needed to buy a fancy lens and extensive equipment to keep up with others. After learning to shoot with simple props and experimenting with natural light, I realized all you need is to be creative, be open to learning new techniques and have a good eye.
I would offer advice to anyone looking to start their journey in photography to be true to yourself and your style. Your style makes you unique and if you are good at what you do, you don’t need super expensive equipment just your creative spirit!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Kaitlin Meyers Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I love photographing food and wine! I collaborated with a good friend of mine, Sam Capaldi, (Samantha Sommelier), photographing her amazing recipes for her food and wine blog and business. And it’s always a bonus to try her delicious food after the shoot!
I also really enjoy shooting lifestyle shots along with events. It’s an amazing opportunity to meet new people and hear their stories. I love capturing pure happiness or special moments in people’s lives. It’s all about capturing the moments that will bring people joy for years to come.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
Skillshare! Skillshare is an amazing website that features online classes featuring anything you can think of in the creative world. There are 100’s of different photography videos featuring different styles and techniques. Classes range from 20 minutes to 2 hours, it’s as easy as taking 30 minutes out of your day to watch a video to learn something new to enhance your skill.
