Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Judy Huey.
Dr. Judy Huey, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In San Francisco, while in high school, I volunteered at a US Public Health Service Hospital and was taught chairside dental assisting by the dentists on staff. All of the dentists were new graduates who were passionate about their work and eager to share their knowledge. Their enthusiasm was contagious and they encouraged me to be a dentist. I attended UCSF School of Dentistry and graduated in 1987. I had a private practice in a restored Victorian in lower Pacific Heights with two partners. In 2006, my husband and I moved to Scottsdale, Arizona. It was difficult saying goodbye to family, friends and patients but for health reasons, we needed a dry hot climate. I purchased a small private practice in Scottsdale and am enjoying life in the Southwest.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a relatively smooth journey. I was fortunate to have received excellent clinical training from UCSF but nothing can prepare you for being a small business owner except for on-the-job training. I have been practicing dentistry for 31 years, so I am no longer being mistaken for the dental assistant when I walk into the treatment room. 50% of dental students are female so women dentists are no longer a novelty. I face the same challenges as any small business owner in hiring, firing and training staff. I would advise any young women who are just starting their journey to always value yourself. The most common mistake that I see young women make is to not fight/negotiate for a higher salary or benefits when interviewing for a position just as their male associates are doing. This leads to the salary inequality that we’ve been hearing so much about.
What should we know about Judy Huey DDS? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a general dentist which means that I do a little bit of everything. I treat patients with sleep apnea who can’t wear a CPAP by making a custom fitted oral appliance to open up their airways. I do adult invisible braces utilizing Clear Correct. I place one visit/same day crowns using the Cerec technology. Patients love that they can watch their crowns being made and walk out with the crown in their mouth all in one visit. I especially enjoy seeing patients who have anxiety usually due to past bad experiences. My goal is to make their dental experience an exceptional one so that they ultimately enjoy coming in to see us. I offer nitrous oxide gas, noise cancellation headphones and most importantly, I explain everything that I am doing every step of the way so patients know exactly what to expect and there are no surprises.
