Conversations with the Inspiring Jordan Southwick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Southwick.

Jordan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Makeup and Beauty have always been my passion. It wasn’t until recently, that I’ve been fortunate enough to explore professional opportunities. I grew up in a family of all boys so my love for doing makeup was never taken seriously and always just considered a hobby. I went to school to specialize in ultrasound and eventually left that for the mortgage world. But, I had that “something missing” feeling we all get right before doing what we love. I had been doing friends make up for years and through their encouragement and some self-confidence I was finally ready to make a jump and develop a professional page. Clients started rolling in and the relationships I’ve made have me feeling truly blessed!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
If it was easy, it wouldn’t be as rewarding! It takes practice and LOTS of mistakes. But like all things worth it, if you stick with it and love what you do it starts to get better! Practice, practice, practice! Don’t ever get discouraged when that wing isn’t “on fleek!” I’m always trying new looks on myself and always doing research on what’s hot and what’s not. I learn from others and truly love what others are doing out there! Everyone starts new! And with styles and techniques ever changing we as artists will always have something new to learn! That’s the beauty of this industry!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into MakeupByJSouth story. Tell us more about the business.
I love to say that my job is building relationships while enhancing and “glamming” self-beauty. It’s important to me that my clients feel beautiful before and after makeup application. I also love and thrive off of the “wow” factor. Seeing clients see how much they glow at the end of our appointment with a big smile on their face is the exact reason that I keep booking clients. Another thing that “sets me apart” is the makeup room that I have created. Last year, we bought our first home and the first and only room that was complete for the first few months was my “glam room”. Featuring countless bright and natural lights with the addition of just about every makeup brand and item that you can think of, it’s a fun place to bring clients in and not only make them feel beautiful but also answer any questions that they may have. I am a big believer in sharing beauty knowledge and ideas.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
Anything motivational! If somebody has something positive to say, I have time to listen. I follow countless Instagrammers, YouTubers and bloggers and am constantly reading, watching and trying what they are teaching. I am debating creating a YouTube channel of my own one of these days. Stay tuned…
