Conversations with the Inspiring Joanna Janeth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanna Janeth.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started beauty school straight out of high school. I graduated from beauty school eleven months later and I took on a job at Sally’s Beauty Supply while I took my state board exams. Once I was licensed, I was hired as a nail tech in a beauty salon in Phoenix. I heard about them through Facebook and I had been following their page for about a year, so I knew I wanted to work there. I worked there for about three weeks.

I was at my first hair show when I was walking back to my car that I heard someone yell my name. It was one of my old instructors at my beauty school. They introduced me to this lady that was looking to hire someone. I showed her a few pictures of my work and she asked me to come in for an interview. At the interview, I got hired on, but I asked them to give me two weeks so I could let the other salon know that I would no longer be working there anymore.

I worked for that salon for about eight years. It was great, they had a good flow of walk-ins so I was able to build a clientele very easily.

In 2016, I started going to school to further my education in biology and eventually go to PA school.

I currently work at Blush Hair Studios in Gilbert and go to school as well. I also started volunteering at a clinic in Phoenix. I only just started renting the chair a few days ago from one of my great friends and I am going to graduate with my bachelor’s degree in biology in December. I plan on starting the application process for PA school next year as well as continuing working in the studio and keeping up with my clienteles needs and wants.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Some days it feels like you just want to take a nap and forget about it all.

As for myself, it has been a challenge balancing school and keeping up with the salon. It’s hard when you have a mountain of homework, but you have to be in the salon and work on your feet for 8+ hours without a break.
I have had to learn how to micromanage my schedules and how to keep work and school separated from each other.

The best advice I can give other young women who are starting their journey is to constantly remind yourself why you are doing what you are doing. I like to stick sticky notes with my personal goals on them and placing them in places I know I will eventually find them. I do the same thing with my school notebooks and write “A+” on the front page to keep my eye on the prize.

The most important piece of advice I can offer, though, is not to be so hard on yourself. It’s okay if you don’t get something right the first time around, there will always be another opportunity to better yourself. Take everything as a learning experience.

Finally, setting goals constantly! I like to set daily, weekly, monthly and yearly goals.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Hair by Joanna at Blush Hair Studios story. Tell us more about the business.
I love it all! Anything from kids hair cuts all the way to coloring hair. My favorite, though, is taking a dark-haired goddess and adding brightness into it, like blonde. It is a long process, sometimes it can take a few sessions before we get the desired shade. For this reason, I like to educate my clients with proper hair care away from the salon.

Blonde or not, healthy hair is happy hair!

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Keep going. Don’t stop! Sometimes, it will feel like you are alone, but you don’t have to be. You have yourself. Be your own best friend and learn how to be your own motivator. It’s also okay to give yourself praise on your own accomplishments. Be proud of yourself, you’ve come this far! Remember to remain humble, because there will always be someone that can teach you more, and there will always be someone that can learn from you. And most importantly, always remember that you are a Queen!
