Conversations with the Inspiring Jessica Becker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Becker.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I heard about Scottsdale Moms Blog after I had my first baby. I loved the community they were building and the articles that were all written by local moms. A few years later, I saw that they were looking for new writers and I applied. My writing was accepted and I had fun being one of the moms sharing with the community. Then, a few months into that, one of the owners was selling her ownership of the blog and I decided it would be a great opportunity. I know co-own Scottsdale Moms Blog with Angela and we work hard to continue the original mission to bring moms local knowledge, parenting advice, and bring moms together in the community.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My advice would be to not get too caught up in numbers, especially now when a lot of businesses (this one included) are online where you can be judged by the number of followers, likes, comments, page views, etc. Though some numbers serve a purpose, they don’t define you or what you are doing. Know what your mission is and make all that you do work towards that. You don’t need a million followers or 1,000 likes to reach people and make a difference.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Scottsdale Moms Blog story. Tell us more about the business.
Scottsdale Moms Blog is an online parenting resource. Our goal is to help moms (and dads) in the community through their parenting journey. We have new articles written several times a week from other local moms who share their thoughts, wisdom, and love for the community. We have a family directory, several guides, and “best of” lists on our site so that parents can find things like preschools and family-friendly restaurants easily. We also plan play dates and events several times a year so that families and moms can meet in person, make connections and hopefully new friends.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
We are a mom run and driven website and because of that, many times, we aren’t taken seriously because some believe we are just “stay at home moms” doing a hobby of writing for a website. That is not the case at all, this is a business that we care about and put a lot of hours into, so that other parents in the community can find the resources and connection they need.
